The first Santa Cruz County World War II casualty to be listed in Watsonville's Roll of Honor was a thirty-one year- old army nurse.
Opal Fern Chilcote was born in Hanley, Iowa, on July 21, 1909, to Thomas and Estelle Chilcote. Also included in her family were four brothers, four sisters and a half sister. Opal spent a large portion of her formative years in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where the Chilcote family resided, but returned to Winterset, Iowa, where she graduated from St. Charles High School.
After being employed in a local doctors office for two years, she entered and completed a three-year nurse's train- ing program at Lutheran Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She later left the school's hospital and moved to Fresno where her mother resided. Opal then relocated to Watsonville and for two years was employed in the Third Street Hospital.
When the US began mobilization in early 1941, Opal Chilcote applied for a position in the Army Nurse Corps and was accepted. Commissioned a second lieutenant, Lt. Chilcote was assigned to an army facility in San Luis Obispo, California. On May 31, 1941, while boating in Morro Bay with friends and army associates, the boat in which she was a passenger capsized, throwing the occupants into the water. Opal Chilcote was drowned in the accident. Her body was recovered and sent to Fresno, California, for burial.
Second Lt. Opal Chilcote's death was the first (active duty) military death to be entered into the Pajaro Valley World War II Roll of Honor.

The first recorded death at Camp McQuaide, near Watsonville, California, was of a local youth.
Richard P. Kirby was born in Watsonville to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kirby on November 22, 1922. Included in the Kirby family with Richard were sons Raymond, John and Edwin and daughter Loretta. Richard attended Moreland Notre Dame academy and became active in the Boy Scouts. He later enrolled in Watsonville High School and maintained a newspaper delivery route after school.
In July 1940, while still a student, Richard enlisted in the 250th Coast Artillery National Guard and was federally mobilized with that unit in September. Kirby was forced to leave school, but made plans to return after his tour of duty. Private Kirby was assigned to Battery D at nearby Camp McQuaide and served with that unit guarding Monterey bay for nine months.
On July 7 Kirby began experiencing a lower stomach pain that was diagnosed as appendicitis. An emergency appen- dectomy was performed; however, complications set in and attempts to save him failed. On July 18, 1941, Richard P. Kirby died at the station hospital.
Following a funeral at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watsonville, Private Richard Kirby was given a full military honor funeral and was buried in the Watsonville Catholic Cemetery.

Dade's date with destiny ended in a car in a garage before he could live out his Navy role.
Dade Oliver Youngs Jr. was born to Dade and Christina Youngs on January 29, 1924, in Lemoore, California. When he was still young, the family moved to Santa Cruz, California, where Dade attended Mission Hill Junior High School. In the fall of 1938, Youngs enrolled in Santa Cruz High School where he majored in woodwork and cooking and served on the Junior Traffic Patrol.
Youngs left school early and on February 3, 1941, joined the US Navy. He was sent to San Diego for boot camp and upon completion, was trained as an aviation machinist. Scoring high in his class, he was promoted to Aviation Machinist Mate second class.
While returning to the San Diego, California, naval base on September 2, 1941, Dade Youngs and four companions were passengers in an automobile that went out of control a short distance north of Santa Monica. The vehicle crashed through a fence, clipped off a corner of a house and smashed into a garage, killing Dade. His body was returned to Santa Cruz and buried in the Soquel Cemetery.

Accompanying the name "Henry Stokes Hayden" on the December 2, 1942, Watsonville Register-Pajaronian Roll of
Honor, was the comment, "Missing in Alaska."
Selective Service Records indicate that Henry Hayden was born in New Jersey in 1920. No information is available as to his birth, family or formative years. Enlistment records indicate that he had completed four years of high school, was single and worked as a photographer. It is not known when he arrived in the Pajaro Valley, nor by whom he was employed.
While residing in Santa Cruz County, he enlisted as a private in the 250th Coastal Artillery National Guard. On September 16, 1940, the unit was mustered into federal service and stationed at Camp McQuaide near Watsonville. At the camp Private Hayden was trained to be a coastal
artillerymen and/or "army mine planter."
In order to strengthen the defense of the Alaskan coast the army ordered the 250th Coast Artillery from Camp McQuaide to the area of Sitka, Alaska in June 1941. Henry Hayden departed with his battery from San Francisco on September 12, 1941, aboard the SS Chirkof. They arrived in Seattle on September 15 and three days later, left for Alaska. During the month of September, his unit was deployed on a windswept island two miles wide and ten miles long, located seven miles across a choppy sea from Kodiak, Alaska.
The circumstances behind Hayden's death are not known, but the American Battlefield Monument Commission records note that on September 19, 1941, Henry Hayden
was "Missing in Action or Buried at Sea."

A world-class event brought an end to the life of a navy lieutenant during a day of infamy.
US Census information suggests that Clifford Thurston Janz was born in New York about 1911. That same 1920 census lists him as a boarder in the household of Frank and Hattie Loomis of Plymouth, Michigan. No record of his formative years or relationship to Santa Cruz County has been found.
The date of his entry into the US Navy is not known; however, casualty records for the USS Arizona indicate that he was commissioned on December 10, 1938. Clifford Janz was married during this period; his wife remained in San Diego while he was away at sea.
On December 7, 1941, Lt. Clifford Janz was serving as an engineering officer aboard the battleship USS Arizona, which was moored on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, as Japa- nese planes flew over the Pali on the island of Oahu. In an official report issued following the war, Ensign D. Hein, a survivor or the attack stated:
"At about two or three minutes before 0800 Sunday, I was asleep in my room when I faintly heard a siren. Shortly thereafter I distinctly heard G.Q. I put some clothes on and went up from lower wardroom country to the second deck.
"Lt. C.T. Janz was sending everyone in the vicinity to shelter below the armored deck. I went down with Lt. Janz and about forty enlisted men. Before we could close the hatch there were three violent blasts with flame and powder fumes entering the compartment. I then told all personnel in the vicinity to get out and go topside to avoid the gas. About twenty (20) enlisted personnel and myself went topside. I
saw the entire ship forward of #3 turret to be a raging fire."
This explosion likely took the life of Lt. Janz. His remains were never recovered. Janz is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the US National Cemetery in Honolulu.

Robert R. McLennan was born to Mr. and Mrs. William R. McLennan in Texas in 1913. The family later moved to Watsonville, where Robert lived for an undetermined period of time. His enlistment records note that he had graduated from high school, attended a college for one year and in 1940 was living in Stanislaus County, California.
On August 10, 1940, McLennan enlisted in the regular US Army Air Force as a private at the Presidio of Monterey and requested duty in the Philippine Islands. Following his basic training, he was assigned to the 7th Material Squadron, 19th Bomb Group, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In September 1941 the squadron was ordered to San Francisco to join other units bound for the Philippines. They remained at Angel Island until October 4 and then departed for Honolulu. When they arrived at Manila Bay on October 24, they were garrisoned at Clark Field near Manila.
The squadron was completing preparations for a move to Del Monte Airbase on the island of Mindanao, but before that could take place the Japanese attacked. On December 8, 1941, four hours after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, they bombed Clark Field. During that attack, Private Robert R. McLennan was killed and his remains were never recovered.
He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery.

A quiet country boy from North Carolina with a strong singing voice heard a different sound on December 7, 1941.
Ralph William Thompson was born in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on April 21, 1917, to Frank and Christine Thompson. Two sisters rounded out the family. Christine had moved to Santa Cruz with Ralph and her two daughters; Frank remained in North Carolina. She settled the family into a residence on Berkshire Street and enrolled
Ralph in Mission Hills Junior High School. In 1932 Ralph entered Santa Cruz High School and took a general varied course but his special interest was the choir. After graduat- ing from high school in 1936, Ralph worked as a landscape gardener in Redwood City,
California.
In December 1940 Thompson joined the US Navy and entered boot camp in San Diego. Throughout 1941 he attended additional navy schools and served as a Fireman Third Class. In October he received orders to report aboard the USS Helena berthed at Pearl Harbor.
When the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941, Ralph was seriously wounded and hospitalized. He died on December 11 and is buried at the US National Cemetery in Hawaii.

Christmas Day 1941 was long remembered in the Schipper family, but not for bringing good tidings of great joy.
Henry Schipper Jr. was born on January 15, 1910, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schipper Sr. The Schipper's later moved to Casselton, North Dakota, with their sons Henry, Ted, Lester, Howard and George and daughters Lois and Geraldine. Henry Jr. attended Casselton High School and after graduation, enrolled in the Univer- sity of North Dakota, where he majored in commerce.
In addition to his scholastic curriculum Henry joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps and considered a career as an army officer. When he received his degree in 1932, Henry Schipper was also commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve.
The Schipper family moved to Santa Cruz about 1933. Henry accompanied them and found employment in what was described as the "commercial area." Lt. Schipper con- tinued to remain active in the local army reserve.
In 1933 Henry married Evelyn Lukins, a Santa Cruz girl, and in 1935 their daughter Judith was born. In the late 1930s, Henry, Evelyn and Judith moved to San Bruno, Cali- fornia, to be closer to the Butler Brothers Store in San Francisco where he was manager of the carpet department.
In 1940, with war clouds gathering in the Pacific, First Lieutenant Henry Schipper was activated by the army and sent to Fort Ord in Monterey. This was followed by a brief assignment at Fort Benning, Georgia. In September 1941 Lt. Schipper was sent to the Philippines and attached to the 72nd Infantry Regiment of the 71st Philippine Infantry Division. In October he was promoted to Captain and assumed responsibility for the training of a battalion of Filipino recruits.
When the Japanese invaded the Philippines in December 1941, Schipper and the recruit battalion he was training on the island of Manbucal were ordered to the defense of Manila. On Christmas Day, 1941, Captain Henry Schipper Jr. was killed in action. His remains were later recovered and interred in the Manila American Cemetery. His awards include Philippines Awards, the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

December 24, 1941, was not the joyful holiday that Loiya Burns had prepared for her husband.
William Richard Burns was born about 1906. No information is available as to his parents, place of birth, siblings or formative years.
Burns joined the US Navy in 1925 and throughout his naval career, he served on various ships and at several posts. He continued to advance in rank and by 1941, was a Yeoman first class.
While in the navy, he met and married Loiya Galeener of Watsonville, California. His petty officer rating afforded him an opportunity to have his wife and eleven-year old son, Dennis, accompany him in Hawaii. In June 1941 Loiya and Dennis returned to California and made their home with her parents in the Pajaro Valley.
Petty Officer First Class William Richard Burns was serving in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands on December 10, 1941, when he was killed in action or buried at sea. The telegram notifying his widow of his death arrived at the family home on Christmas Eve.
His body was never recovered and he is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery. His awards include the Purple Heart.

His request for duty in the Philippines was granted and with it, an appointment with death.
Melvin Orr was born on May 25, 1920, to Mr. and Mrs. Mervin L. Orr of Fresno, California. In addition to Melvin, the Orr family included sons Vernon, Myron, Darrell and Kenneth and a daughter Beverly. Melvin spent much of his formative years in Santa Cruz, where his father repaired cash registers and typewriters. While living in Santa Cruz, young Melvin worked in a restaurant at the beach. In 1934 the Orr family returned to Fresno where he completed three years of high school. He remained in the Central Valley until the time of his enlistment.
On October 3, 1941, Melvin Orr enlisted in the regular US Army Quartermaster Corps and requested assignment in the Philippine Islands. After completing basic training, Orr was sent to the Philippines and posted to Fort Mills.
In December 1941, war was declared and the Japanese began bombing raids on the fort. During a particularly heavy aerial bombardment on January 4, 1942, Private Melvin L. Orr was killed. His commanding officer later wrote to his parents recounting the youth's courage and bravery while under attack.
Melvin was initially buried on the post grounds, but his remains were later exhumed and shipped to the Golden Gate Cemetery in San Bruno, California for reburial in 1949.
