Library of Congress Veterans History Project
Interview conducted by Jeanne Czarnecki and produced by David Addison. Recorded at the Aptos Branch, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, August 14, 2017.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in May 1940, Christopher DiMaio attended the University of Rhode Island as a pre-med student, and graduated from Georgetown Medical School. After finishing his internship in Long Island, and New York, he decided to join the Navy, as the need for physician rose dramatically in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. He served 13 months in Vietnam. For 6 months, he followed and served a battalion later known as the "Walking Dead," one of the units that suffered the highest causalities in the history of Marine Corps. DiMaio's job is to serve American lives in the field -- stopping blood flow, wrapping bandages and inserting chest tubes -- all under enemy fire (Santa Cruz sentinel, June 29, 2015). DiMaio has received many service awards and medals, such as Veteran of the Year in 2015, National Service Medal, Vietnam Combat Action Ribbon, Service Medal with FMF Combat Insignia, 3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam UN Campaign Medal, and Navy Commendation in Field Combat. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Library of Congress Veterans History Project
Interview conducted by Jeanne Czarnecki and produced by David Addison. Recorded at Valley Haven, Santa Cruz, October 25, 2016.
Robert Lee Burns was born on 3 October 1926 in Oakland, California and moved to Washington, DC with his family. At age of 17 in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and graduated the following year from boot camp and Quartermasters School in Bainbridge, Maryland. He was deployed to the Philippines and worked alongside the SeaBees in the Leyte Gulf. Shipped to Morotai in the Dutch East Indies, Burns met up with his assigned Amphibious Landing Craft, an LCR 226. His job as quartermaster was to keep the ship's 24-hour log and obtain chart maps for officers above deck. After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, naval war activity ended and his craft was decommissioned. Buns reached the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade). Discharged from the navy, Burns attended George Washington University and graduated with a major in economics and minors in history and political science. He had a long career as a military adviser to U.S. Military Command in France, Germany, the State Department and NATO. During the Cold War, he spent 5 years on the Palestine Desk from 1950 to 1955. He also worked as a political counselor to the Hague and in Wellington, New Zealand.

Interview conducted by Jeanne Czarnecki and produced by David Addison. Recorded at Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Headquarters, January 6, 2016.
Lynne Sansevero was born in the Bronx, New York, but moved to Mystic Island, New Jersey at age 7. As an exceptional student, Lynne graduated from high school at age 17 with plans to attend Rutgers University. She joined the army as a result of her parents' refusal to sign paperwork for colleges. Lynne served in the army from 1981 to 1984. In Ft. Dix, New Jersey, she graduated top of basic training in "Company B," the first all-female brigade. In Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, she completed Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and received a 68S as a preventative medicine specialist, and a 68W as combat medic. She was assigned to work as a preventative health specialist at General Leonard Wood Community Hospital (GLWACH) in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. It is at GLWACH that Lynne was charged, arrested and dismissed with homosexuality. Thanks to a supportive commander's lobby, Lynne was able to leave the military with an honorable discharge. Because of her extraordinary performance in the army, she reached the rank of E4. Three years after discharge, Lynne moved to California and resumed her formal education. She earned a master's degree and career in information technology. She was officially married to her life partner after the passage of Proposition 8.

<p>SAN FRANCISCO (Special) - The Northern California area of the War Relocation Authority closed its doors here Wednesday as the wartime agency's four-year-old job of handling the relocation of the people of Japanese ancestry came to a successful conclusion.</p><p>As Area Supervisor Charles F. Miller turned the key in the lock of the area office door for the last time, only the WRA national office in Washington remained open to complete administrative details and it is expected to close on or before June 30.</p><p>Four district offices of the Northern California area, Oakland, Santa Rosa, Stockton and Watsonville, closed April 19; and the remaining four at San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and Fresno were closed May 3. Unclaimed lots of goods, stored by people of Japanese ancestry at time of evacuation, were moved to WRA's San Francisco warehouse some weeks ago and sold at public auction April 29.</p><p>A final check of returnees to the area, which included all of California with the exception of the nine southernmost counties, showed approximately 34,757 persons of Japanese ancestry had returned, or 75 per cent of the pre-evacuation population of 46,357 in the area, according to Miller.</p><p>"Our job in this area is completed," Miller said. "From now on the responsibility for the welfare of the people of Japanese ancestry who have returned to their homes in California rests with the individual communities.</p><p>"Already the returnees, most of them citizens, have found their places in community life. Among them are many of the more than 22,000 Nisei veterans who served with our armed forces during the war and whose record in combat in all theatres proved beyond a doubt that loyalty has nothing to do with race, color or creed," Miller continued.</p><p>"On behalf of the entire staff of WRA," said Miller, "I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of California for their fine cooperation and understanding during a period of stress caused by the exigencies of wartime.</p><p>"The broad understanding and fair play exhibited by the newspapers aided us materially in accomplishing the job we were assigned to do as did the inestimable help given by labor unions, service clubs, church groups, fraternal organizations and other groups."</p><p>Continued Miller, "I particularly want to acknowledge the close cooperation given by Governor Warren and the immeasurable aid extended by Attorney General Robert W. Kenny and the State Department of Justice, the State and County Welfare departments, the FBI, Army Intelligence, and the various law enforcement officers of the cities and counties in Northern California.</p><p>"There are many other fine groups, such as the Pacific Coast Committee on American Principles and Fair Play, the National Council on Race Relations, the Friends organizations, the American Civil Liberties Union, interracial groups and civic unity councils, as well as individual citizens whose stand for tolerance and against bigotry was outstanding.</p><p>"Frankly, without the help of all these groups and individuals, all of whom believe in the American way of life, our job could not have been accomplished," Miller concluded."</p>

<p>LOS ANGELES (UP) - A test case to determine constitutionality of withholding American citizenship from Japanese aliens was filed in federal court late Wednesday.</p><p>The suit was brought by the American Civil Liberties union in behalf of Gensuki Mafuda, Shousuki Nitta and Choyei Kondo, with immigration and naturalization director Albert de Guercio named as defendant for refusing to accept their citizenship applications.</p><p>The complaint outlined that one of Mafuda's sons was killed while fighting with the American army in Italy and posthumously was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Kondo during the war had taught Japanese at a U.S. navy school and had a son wounded in Italy and Nitta has a son serving in the army now as a lieutenant.</p><p>The suit said all three had come to the United States more than 40 years ago and in all respects were qualified for citizenship.</p>
