Chuck Atkinson and Sarah Rabkin were faculty at UC Santa Cruz at the time of the quake; while Sarah was in a union meeting, Chuck saw the earthquake from a vista on campus over the bay. Their account includes two “documentary poems” from Chuck on his experience, and Sarah’s vantage point as a resident preceptor in the campus dorms.

Janis O’Driscoll was working at the downtown branch of the Santa Cruz Public Library on the evening that the ’89 earthquake struck, and was responsible as an emergency worker for a large number of children who were at the library after school. Janis describes her experience, and compares it with an earlier experience of an earthquake in Ecuador.

Beth Savage worked at the old Saturn Café and experienced the quake from there; her story describes her experience there, and the tragedy of her roommate's lover, Robin Ortiz, who died in the collapse of the Coffee Roasting Company. In doing so, she gives insight into the effects on the queer community, of which she and Robin were part.
