Santa Cruz City fire fighters performing a cliff rescue off West Cliff Drive. Cliff rescues began in the 1940's and employed chain ladders. The rescue basket, which is being used in this photo, came into use in the 1950's.

A stereograph of the first Santa Cruz Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive. It was built by the U.S. government in 1869 and torn down in 1948.

The West Cliff bridge was built in 1918 by the Southern Pacific Railroad over its tracks near Washington and Beach Streets. The wooden bridge is 62 feet long and was constructed using the 1840 truss design patented by William Howe.
