He and his brother Giobrata accompanied their parents in the family immigration to the United States in February 1906 aboard the SS Deutschland that arrived in New York on February 24. The Pistone family then traveled to Monterey where Nichol worked as a laborer in the lime industry. Andrea likely received some education in Monterey before he and his brother Giobrata moved to Aptos in 1915 to work in the lumber industry. In 1917 the brothers relocated to a residence on Mission Street in Santa Cruz. \r\n\r\nOn March 14, 1917, Andrea enlisted in the US Army through a program sponsored by the county probation department and was sent to Fort McDowell in San Francisco for training. \r\n\r\n“Fort McDowell was very active during World War I, serving as a Recruit Depot for men entering the Army. Men drafted in the western states were sent to Fort McDowell and held for about two weeks, during which time they would be given physical examinations, issued uniforms, and given some rudimentary military training. At the same time enlisted men returning from Hawaii and the Philippines for discharge, furlough, retirement or reassignments were being processed at the post. About 4,000 men a month passed through Fort McDowell during this period. Overcrowding became the rule—temporary tent encampments were erected at Point Blunt and on the old Camp Reynolds parade ground in an effort to ease the crush. The war-driven over-crowding was such that the newly completed Post hospital at East Garrison did not serve as a hospital when completed, but became a temporary barracks instead.”\r\n \r\nPistone was listed as an unassigned recruit at the time of his death on April 22, 1917. The cause of his death is not available; however, an unusually high number of soldiers (five) died in the Fort McDowell hospital during April 1917. Andrea Pistone's remains were buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio of San Francisco. \r\n\r\nCAG; 1910 US Census, CA, Monterey; SCSf, 1917/03/15 2:1; SC Cnty Naturalization, SCCGS Vol. 4 Pg 127; SF Nat'l Cem website http://www.interment.net/data/us/ca/sanfran/sfnat/ san_fran_pikpr.htm; Soennichsen, John, Calif. Young Wilkerson, along with his brother Robert and sisters Bernice, Lois and Helen, accompanied their parents to Santa Cruz where his father became the pastor of the First Christian Church. Grayson spent his formative years in Santa Cruz and attended local elementary schools; however, there is no record of his attending a local high school. \r\n\r\nCalifornia Adjutant General Office records indicate that when Wilkerson enlisted in the US Army on April 13, 1917, he listed his residence as Keeler, California. He was assigned to the cavalry branch and sent to Fort McDowell located on Angel island in San Francisco Bay for processing. \r\n\r\nPossibly it was due to overcrowding, unsanitary conditions or the lack of medical attention at the post that brought about the \"pneumatic\" illness that Wilkerson contracted. A US Army Surgeon General's report indicated that there were six deaths among recruits at Fort McDowell during May 1917. On May 18, 1917, Private Grayson Lacy Wilkerson died of left lobar pneumonia. Feliciano and three companions were crossing the river on an improvised raft when it suddenly went to pieces, throwing the guardsmen into the water. Feliciano was swept away and Frank Berden would have suffered the same fate had it not been for William Moore, who managed to get Berden ashore and then went after Feliciano. He was unable to reach the struggling soldier and threw him a board hoping it would hold him up until he could reach him. But Feliciano was swept away and drowned. Lawrence Bisby, the fourth member of the party, managed to reach the shore in safety.”\r\n\r\nThe body of John Feliciano was recovered and returned to Watsonville; his funeral was held at the Christian Church with fellow members of Company L serving as pallbearers. Civil War veterans of the local R. L. McCook Post of the Grand Army of the Republic provided the guard of honor for Feliciano, whose remains were buried in the Watsonville Pioneer cemetery. \r\n\r\nWhen the Victory Byway Memorial obelisk was erected in Santa Cruz, the name \"Ferdinand\" accompanied his name rather than John. Information regarding his birth, family and early life are not available. His arrival date in Santa Cruz County is not known; however, in June of 1917 he was living in the San Lorenzo valley community of Zayante and employed by the Hartman and Perry Company as a \"die-making laborer.\" \r\n\r\nErnest Fitch's military experience began on June 5, 1917 when he registered for the draft. At the time of his registration he was described as being single, of medium height and stature with light colored hair and light blue eyes. Ernest Fitch was part of the first draft contingency from Santa Cruz County, primarily made up of men between the ages of twenty-one to thirty-one. On September 22, 1917, the draftees boarded a train in Santa Cruz and were sent to Camp Lewis, Washington. \r\n\r\nUpon completion of basic training, Fitch was assigned to Company E, 4th Battalion of the 20th Engineers, located in the Washington, DC area for additional training and deployment to Europe. A unit history indicates that \r\n“Hikes, drills, fatigue duty, measles, mumps, changes of living quarters, extremely cold weather, and persistent rumors of departure marked the days of waiting for sailing orders, but a number of items of equipment were delayed, and Christmas came with no definite news. Finally the barrack bags were checked out, visitors were forbidden entrance to camp, and marched out of the University grounds at 12:30 A.M. on the morning of January 3, accompanied by a snowstorm.” \r\n\r\nPrivate Ernest Fitch did not accompany his departing comrades on January 3 because of illness and he died two days later. The cause of Fitch's death is not known; however, the measles and mumps outbreak mentioned in the unit history may have been contributing factors. Cruts was born in Stewartsville, New Jersey, to Mr. and Mrs. Reuben H. Cruts on August 13, 1888. He remained in Warren County where he spent his formative years and attended local schools. After completing his education, he worked at a cement plant near his home as a craneman on a steam shovel. \r\n\r\nDesiring adventure, Cruts traveled through Canada and into the Western United States, finally settling in Santa Cruz, California. In Santa Cruz, Cruts worked on a dairy farm near Arana Gulch. When the dairy went out of business, he found work at the Portland Cement Plant in Davenport as a millwright. \r\n\r\nWith the outbreak of World War I, Irvin intended to enlist but chose to be drafted with his friends in order that they might remain together. Private Cruts who was described as short and stout with brown eyes and dark hair was sent to Camp Lewis, Washington, for training and then ordered to Camp Mills in Hempstead, New York, for over-seas assignment. While awaiting shipment to Europe in December 1917, Cruts visited home for the last time. \r\n\r\nUpon arrival in England Irvin wrote his mother indicating that he was feeling well except for a slight cold. When he reached France, that slight cold had developed into pneumonia and on January 15, 1918, Private Irvin I. Cruts was found dead. A newspaper reporter interviewed his mother in New Jersey and she shared a final touching message of his service life and death. \r\n\r\n\"I'm proud my brave boy was in the service of his country when he died. He was proud of his uniform. He loved his country, and he made himself a good soldier. He told me some of the men hated to be in the army, but he said he found it best to be cheerful, to do everything willingly, and to make the best of a rough life. When he was here in December, he said every American young man must prepare to do all in his power to make America win this war. He didn't grumble when he didn't get his pay on time, when he had to sleep in tents during the cold weather, and when he had short rations, as he often had in traveling and at certain camps. He was a soldier through and through and that's why he was sent abroad ahead of some who were drafted at the same time in Santa Cruz, California. I am sure they will bury him tenderly over there. I'd like him brought back home, but that may not be. He's there for America and that's some consolation.\" \r\n\r\nMrs. Cruts' \"Soldier Boy,\" Irvin, is buried in the Meuse- Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France.\r\n\r\n(WWIDR; ABMC; SCSn January 31, 1918 8:3)\r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Following his entry into the army on December 12, 1917, he volunteered for the Aviation Corps and was sent to Camp MacArthur in Waco, Texas, for training. \r\n\r\nSoon after Private Parker arrived at the camp, he developed a case of pleuro-pneumonia requiring hospitalization. During his nine weeks of hospitalization an operation was attempted in order to improve his condition but was unsuccessful. The army then made plans for his return to Santa Cruz for a month's medical furlough; however, his condition worsened before that could occur. On March 14, 1918, a nurse shared with him that his end was near and Parker merely replied, \"It is all right,\" and he passed without fear. \r\n\r\nOn March 22, 1918, family, friends, city officials and Civil War veterans from the Grand Army of the Republic were on hand to pay their respects to Clair at the First Methodist Church where he had been baptized. Comdr. Richard M. Elliot, Jr., and 33 enlisted men. Fragments pierced two 50-gallon drums of gasoline and two tanks containing 100 gallons of alcohol. The leaking fluids caught fire as they ran along the deck and enveloped the ship in flames which were not extinguished until late that night.”\r\n \r\nThe Navy department sent a telegram to his mother, Virginia Wood, on March 25 informing her that her son had been a victim of that explosion and that they were unable to recover his body.
