Following basic training, he was assigned to the new tank training facility at Camp Colt at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, commanded by Major Dwight D. Eisenhower. During the period of his training the Spanish flu epidemic was rampant. An Internet website in existence in 2007 noted \r\n“The first major crisis in the notable career of Eisenhower occurred at Camp Colt in September 1918 and involved Fr. Boyle and SFX [St. Francis Xavier] Parish. It was the development of the most virulent epidemic ever to strike the community - the deadly Spanish Influenza. By September 25th Fr. Boyle offered the army the use of SFX Hall as a hospital (which was already in use as quarters for the men at \r\nthe government's request) and it was immediately accepted by the now Major Eisenhower. School was closed and the desks and furniture removed thus converting use back to a hospital for the sick and dying soldiers as had occurred 55 years before ... \r\nThe entire auditorium of Xavier Hall was converted to hospital wards, but by October 2nd even that 70 patient capacity was reached. The first floor of the building was then cleared and it too was used for more patients. The Gettysburg Times reported that the cots were placed in rows while the stage was utilized as an office for the doctor and medics in charge.” \r\n\r\nOn October 4, 1918, at the height of the flu epidemic, Carroll Wyckoff died at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Garretty, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Garretty, was born in Santa Cruz, California on November 2, 1893. Charles, who soon acquired the nickname \"Roy,\" resided in the family home on Water Street with his three brothers and two sisters. Upon completing his formal education, the San Vicente Lumber Company employed Roy as a \"steam engineer\" at their logging camp in Swanton. \r\n\r\nGarretty's introduction to the army began with his draft registration in June 1917. His induction records described him as being of medium height and stature with brown hair and brown eyes. He was among the last of the county residents to be inducted and left Santa Cruz on Easter Sunday 1918, for Camp Lewis, Washington. While at the camp, he wrote home about his marksmanship and noted that, \"out of 60 shots he made 48 good ones.\" \r\n\r\nPrivate Garretty was assigned to the 361st Infantry Regiment of the 91st Infantry Division and left for France in July 1918. While in France, he sent a brief letter home along with silk handkerchiefs as souvenirs and promised that in his next letter he would include gifts for everyone. In September he participated in the St. Mihiel Offensive and in October his unit moved into the Meuse Argonne Region. \r\n\r\n“October 9: The 361st Infantry and the 347th Machine Gun Battalion advanced at 9:40 o'clock, October 9, the right assault battalion reaching the base of Hill 255 under heavy artillery and machine gun fire from the two crests north of them. Many casualties were suffered. At 11 o'clock, wounded men from the right flank combat liaison detachment reported that the 125th Infantry (32nd Division), on the right of the 181st Brigade, had not advanced abreast of them. Further advance being impossible the new line was held, the men digging in and waiting until the resistance from Hills 269 and 255 could be reduced by artillery. Meanwhile Hill 269 was reconnoitered by patrols and was attacked by the 1st Battalion, 361st Infantry. The crest was seized and held at 16 o'clock. Under artillery-fire protection the 3rd Battalion, 361st Infantry, seized Hill 255, after fighting all afternoon, about 18 o'clock and dug in.”\r\n \r\nWhen the armistice was declared on November 11, there was relief in the Garretty household because they expected that Roy would be coming home; however, on November 23 the family received a telegram informing them that he had been killed on October 9, 1918. Information regarding his family and connection with the county has not been found. He was described as being of an \"adventurous disposition and anxious to see the world and take an active part in the big things that were going on.\" In 1917, before the US entry into the war, he left the county to travel toward New York with plans to visit family enroute and stop at different points of interest. \r\n\r\nOn April 26, 1917, while visiting friends at Port Royal, South Dakota, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. After completing his basic training at Quantico, Virginia, he left for Europe and arrived in France ten days later. \r\n\r\nDuring his wartime service in France, Clausen went \"over the top \"three times.\" The first trip over he was gassed slightly; the second time he met with no hurt, but the third time he gave his life for his country.\" According to the USMC 6th Regimental history, Clyde's Company M moved up to the front in the Meuse-Argonne area on October 2 and took up positions near Somme-Py. On October 4, 1918, the Germans launched a massive gas attack and artillery barrage upon the marine position that may have resulted in Clyde's death. The official Marine report of his death stated: \r\n“Clyde L Clausen October 4- Killed in action by 067[?] South of St. Etienne, Champagne sector, Marne France. Date of burial, location and number of grave unknown. \r\nCharacter that would have been used if discharged…Excellent.” \r\n\r\nClyde Clausen's body was initially buried in France, but was returned home following the war and interred in an unidentified Santa Clara County cemetery by the Monaghan Mortuary. \r\n\r\n(WEP November 12, 1918 5:5; Santa Clara County Historical & Genealogical Society, Monaghan Mortuary Records; US Marine Corps Enlistment Records 1798-1940 Amazon.com; Marine Corps in WWI, With the 4th Brigade of Marines, http://www.scuttlebuttsmallchow.com/4brgchron.html, [16 September 2008]) \r\n \r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
