Alfred Alan Gates was born in San Jose, California, on September 26, 1948, to Alfred and Jean Gates. His siblings included brothers Bill, Tim, and Gary and sisters Paula and Alana. The date that the Gates family moved to Santa Cruz County is not known, but in 1966 Alfred was a student at San Lorenzo Valley High School. Following graduation in 1967, Gates married and moved to San Jose with his wife, Glenda. In San Jose he entered a sheet metal apprenticeship program.
In May 1968, while living in Sunnyvale, California, Alfred Gates received his draft notice. Following basic and advanced training, he returned home for a brief leave before being deployed to Southeast Asia.
On October 7, 1968, Alfred was sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade serving in Quang Tin province.
During the 1968 Tet New Year offensive, the 6th Infantry was moved to the northern portion of the province to assist the US Marine Corps in containing the insurgents. According to Gates' platoon leader, Norm Boxly,
“Company A was assigned to patrols of the Rocket Pocket off Chu Lai to try and find the VC and/or NVA 22mm rocket squads. We ran day patrols very seldom and night ambushes all the time. At resupply in the afternoon we would get an overlay showing our ambush for the night or get it called in code over the radio.”
During a patrol that Company A was undertaking on February 7, 1969, Private First Class Alfred Alan Gates was killed in action by small arms fire. His body was recovered and returned to California where he was buried in the Golden Gate Cemetery in San Bruno. Gates was posthumously promoted to corporal and received the Purple Heart.

The Vietnam tour of a member of an old Palo Alto watchmaking family was one month too long.
Arthur Frederick Gleim Jr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gleim in Palo Alto, California, on October 2, 1945. Along with his brother Bruce and sister Georgie, he grew up in Palo Alto and attended local schools. Fred, as he was known, went on to enroll in Palo Alto High School where he was active in audio visual programs, taught Sunday School on weekends, enjoyed aeronautics and had hopes of working at a mission upon graduation. After graduating from high school in June 1963, he entered an unspecified college and earned a business degree to prepare him for entry into the family watch and jewelry business. During or at the completion of his college education, he married Dagmar Ochenkirchen of Aptos, California, and the couple established their residence in Santa Cruz County.
Arthur Gleim was drafted into the US Army about September 1969, and after completing basic and advanced individual training, was ordered to Vietnam. He arrived in Quang Tin province on March 3, 1970 and was assigned to A Company 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade (Americal Div.).
“The battalion operated from LZ [Landing Zone] Professional until August of 1970. In February of 1970, the battalion established a temporary firebase at LZ Mary Ann, at a remote mountain site near Hau Duc, Quang Tin Province. The battalion returned to Mary Ann in the summer of 1970 and operated from there and LZ Young, which was between Tien Phuoc and Tam Ky, during 1970 and 1971.”
While serving in the field on August 4, 1970, Specialist Fourth Class Arthur Frederick Gleim Jr. was killed by a sniper's bullet. His remains were returned to Aptos and following a funeral at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Santa Cruz, were buried in Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

After three months in Vietnam, Rodriguez considered himself an "old timer."
Benito Bobo Rodriguez was born on April 1, 1948, in Blythe, California, to Bocanegra and Betty Rodriguez. At an early age he moved with his family to Freedom, California, where he and his brothers Charles, Joe and Sandy attended Freedom Elementary School. Young Rodriguez also became involved in the community through the Valley Catholic Church and later served as an altar boy at Sunday mass. During his pre-teen years, he was a pitcher on the church-sponsored Padres little league baseball team. In the fall of 1963 Benito enrolled in Watsonville High School and remained there until January 1966 when he dropped out during his junior year.
Following his eighteenth birthday in April, 1966, Benito Rodriguez enlisted in the US Army. He completed basic training at Fort Ord, California, advanced infantry training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and sniper school and paratrooper training at Fort Benning, Georgia. As a 101st Airborne, "Screaming Eagle," sniper he was posted to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, before leaving for Vietnam in January 1968.
When Rodriguez arrived in Vietnam, he joined Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, serving in the central highlands. The 501st Infantry Regiment's primary mission was to intercept and destroy supplies arriving through the Ho Chi Minh trail.
On April 6, 1968, five days after his twentieth birthday, Sergeant Benito Bobo Rodriguez was on a search and destroy mission in Thua Thien Province when an enemy anti-tank round exploded near him taking his life. His body was returned to Watsonville and buried in Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. Benito was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, in addition to service awards.

Grenades pinned down a Watsonville track star leaving him nowhere to run.
Bernardo Kealoha Ramos was born on November 6, 1950, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Bernardo and Maria Ramos. Bernardo Sr. had migrated from the Philippine Islands to Hawaii. In Hawaii he married Maria and the couple had five sons: Bernardo, Mario, Benedict, Florentino and Jamie. The family later moved to Watsonville and established their residence on Doering Avenue. Bernardo Jr. entered Watsonville High School and was remembered as being an all-around good student and tireless worker who excelled in football, track and karate. After his graduation, he enrolled in Cabrillo College where he majored in math and science.
In 1970 Ramos enlisted in the U.S Army and was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington for basic training. Following his advanced individual training, he was deployed to Vietnam on October 20, 1970. Upon arrival he was assigned as a rifleman in Company D, 4th Battalion, 3rd Brigade of the 23rd Infantry (Americal) serving in Quang Tri Province.
On March 24, 1971, Ramos' platoon was conducting a search and destroy mission in a mountainous area and was split into two squads. The previous day they had seen foxholes, fortifications and other evidence of considerable NVA activity and were alert to the possibility of an ambush when they were hit. His squad was attacked and pinned down while grenades were thrown at them over the crest of the hill and AK-47 fire intensified. During the ensuing firefight, Bernardo and three of his fellow platoon members were killed and most of the remainder of the squad was wounded.
Ramos' body was recovered and returned to Watsonville for a requiem mass at Valley Catholic Church and burial in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Friendly fire can be anything but friendly, as Curtis would discover.
Curtis Craig Colyear was born in a tent on July 18, 1950 at Sequoia National Park, California, while his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Colyear, were camping. He grew up in Santa Cruz County with his brothers Colburn and Charles and sisters Rosalind, Roberta and Karen. Curt attended Capitola and Soquel elementary schools before enrolling in Santa Cruz High School in September 1963. While in high school, he played on the football team. Following his graduation in 1968, he was employed at a Standard Oil station.
Colyear enlisted in the US Marine Corps in June 1969 and completed his basic and school-of-infantry training at Camp Pendleton, California. During this period, he became engaged to Patty Perry and the couple made plans for a wedding to take place upon his discharge.
In July 1970 Curt Colyear received orders sending him to Southeast Asia, and he arrived in Vietnam on July 20th. He was assigned to Company M, 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment 1st Marine Division serving in Quang Nam Province.
“During the summer [1970], elements of the 7th Marine Regiment entered two major large-scale operations. Pickens Forest, a search and clear mission which centered in the Thu Bon River valley, generated little reaction from the enemy and ended on 24 August. Imperial Lake was undertaken a week later. The 2nd Battalion and elements of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, combed the central Que Son Mountains, looking for the evasive enemy. Units of the 7th Marines captured a NVA battalion command post and found the bodies of four senior commanders in a destroyed bunker. Imperial Lake, as it turned out, was the last operation of the war for the regiment.”
When fragments of allied mortar rounds struck him on August 17, 1970, Corporal Curtis Craig Colyear became a Non-Hostile, Ground Casualty caused by Accident. His body was recovered and returned to Santa Cruz for a funeral and burial at Oakwood Memorial Park.

Barry was a cavalryman who guarded the German border against Ivan's threats.
Daniel J. Barry was born in Minneapolis Minnesota on February 1, 1947. His mother's name was Elaine. His early years were spent with his brother William and sisters Benita and Cynthia in Minnesota before moving to Soquel, California, in 1954. His mother remarried a Mr. Kelliher and her new husband brought his son Charles into their family. During his early years, Daniel attended local grammar schools and became active in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Capitola. In 1965 he graduated from Soquel High School and was employed locally.
In November 1967 Daniel Barry entered the US Army. His basic training location is not known; however, his advanced individual training likely took place at Fort Knox, Kentucky. At the conclusion of his training he was assigned to I troop, 3rd Squadron, of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. At the time that Barry joined his squadron, they were stationed at Kaiserlautern, Germany, and were patrolling the German border of the Iron Curtain to curtail anticipated Soviet action.
In July 1968, the 3rd ACR Regiment was redeployed to the United States and assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington. While his unit was preparing for potential re-deployment to Germany, Daniel Barry was promoted to Sergeant. On July 14, 1969, Daniel J. Barry was killed in an automobile accident in Bremerton, Washington.
His body was returned to Santa Cruz and on July 19, following his funeral service, he was interred in Oakwood Memorial Park.

"We are sitting in the Chu River that goes through Da Nang right now," Daryl Keen wrote home from Vietnam on July 14, 1965. "We are going to load supplies and take them to a base down the coast." This would be the last that his fiancée and family would hear from him as he prepared to move down the river to supply a US Marine detachment.
Daryl La Verne Keen was born on June 8, 1944, to Kermit and Helen Keen. Daryl, along with his brothers, Don, Eugene, Jerold and James, and his sister, Sandra, grew up in the family home on Laurel Street in Santa Cruz. He was described as "a quiet, shy, good-looking blonde young man with bright blue eyes that saw a future as an architect or construction engineer."
At Santa Cruz High School Keen excelled academically and was admitted to the Hi Tow Tong boy's honor society. In addition to being a surfer and strong swimmer he was also a member of the school's undefeated wrestling team. Following his graduation from high school in June 1962, he enrolled in Cabrillo College to continue his technical studies.
In the latter part of 1962 Daryl Keen enlisted in the US Navy and after completing boot camp in San Diego, was trained as a quartermaster. In 1963, he and Susan Riep, a local Santa Cruz girl, announced their plans to marry following his discharge in June 1966.
Quartermaster Third Class Keen was sent to Da Nang where he was assigned to Assault Craft Squadron 1, Division 12. His vessel, the USS LCU 1493 based in Da Nang, supplied ammunition to US Marine units fighting in the area. While serving in Vietnam, Keen wrote home to share his impressions of the conditions he experienced.
“It is hard keeping the writing paper clean. If I take a shower, I am covered with sweat before I dry off. I guess you will have to settle for a grubby letter. The temperature must be a least 110 degrees in the middle of the day...We got a surprise and a let-down this afternoon…It looks like we won't be relieved and sent back to the states like we were supposed to be. I can say for certain we will be over here at least until September.”
Daryl also described the deep weariness of marines leaving after months of battling the Viet Cong, "they only sent the marines home who were just too worn out to fight any more."
Appreciating the problem of over-taxed sailors and marines, Daryl volunteered to extend his service time in Vietnam by an additional year to help relieve manpower shortages.
Daryl Keen was drowned on July 16, 1965, while moving ammo down a river in Quang Tin province of South Vietnam to the US Marine's Chou Lie base camp. His body was recovered and returned to Santa Cruz. Father Donald E. Strano, a close family friend, conducted a memorial service for Daryl; his remains were buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.

Sergeant Lint served in the Armed Forces as a soldier, marine and airman.
Delbert Henry Lint was born on June 2, 1929, in Seaside, California. His mother's name was Mary Russell Lint. At an early age he and his brothers, Robert, Fred and James, and sisters, Maryann, Betty and Shirley, were brought to the Pajaro Valley by their parents. Delbert was educated in local schools in the Pajaro Valley before entering the service in 1945. His twenty-two-year military career included service in the US Army, US Marine Corps and the US Air Force. During those years, he married and had two daughters, Karon and Sharon, who continued to reside with their mother in Alabama.
On November 15, 1969, Staff Sergeant Lint was serving in the Philippine Islands when he died at a railroad site. Newspaper accounts of the day attributed his death to a train wreck. The remembrance of family members however, is that he was killed by an individual attempting to steal his groceries.
His body was returned to Watsonville and after a military funeral provided by Castle Air Force Base at Whites Chapel, he was interred in Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Dickie Lynn Leach was born in Aptos, California on September 17, 1945, to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Leach, who were newcomers to the community. The Leach family also included sons Clarence, Melvin, Calvin and Michael and daughters Mary and Patricia. Dickie grew up in Santa Cruz County and attended elementary school in Aptos until 1957, when his family moved to Alameda, California. He continued grammar school in Alameda and presumably also attended high school in that community.
In March 1964, Leach enlisted in the US Army and upon completion of basic and advanced individual training courses was assigned to duty in Vietnam. During a combat engagement at an unidentified location in July 1966, he was wounded and hospitalized. Following a year's recuperation in an army hospital and with his tour coming to an end, he re-enlisted and was assigned to Germany for a year.
Leach returned to Vietnam in April 1968 and joined the 101st Air Cav Division aerial weapons Company B as a helicopter gunner. On August 8, 1968, Gunship #66-15277 flew into the A Shau Valley in Thua Thien Province and was brought down by an NVA rocket-propelled grenade, killing Specialist Fourth Class Dickie Lynn Leach and fellow crew-members.
His body was recovered and returned to Alameda for a funeral and burial in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA.
