During his high school years, he attended both Santa Cruz and San Lorenzo Valley high schools. \r\n\r\nIn 1960 Calcote left school early, enlisted in the US Navy and received boot camp training at the US Naval Training Center in San Diego. At the completion of his four-year tour he was honorably discharged from the Navy. \r\n\r\nAfter briefly returning to civilian life, Roy enlisted in the US Army. During basic training, he volunteered for Special Forces training. With the successful completion of that program he was issued his Green Beret. \r\n\r\n“The United States Army Special Forces, known in the United States simply as Special Forces or SF, and informally known as 'Green Berets,' is an elite special operations force of the US Army trained for guerrilla warfare, unconventional warfare, and special operations. Its primary mission is to train and assist foreign indigenous forces. \r\nThe main SF unit in South Vietnam was the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) [it] earned seventeen Congressional Medals of Honor in Vietnam, making it the most prominently decorated unit for its size in that conflict. \r\nSpecial Forces personnel also played key roles in the highly secret Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) Studies and Observation Group.”\r\n \r\nDuring the Vietnam War, Roy Calcote was the recipient of two Bronze Stars for bravery and three Purple Hearts. When he returned, he married Elaine and they had two daughters, Cimberly and Shaunda. The family later established their permanent residence in Porterville, California. \r\n\r\nOn March 27, 1971, while he was still serving in the army, Calcote was the victim of an accidental gunshot wound that required hospitalization. He and his two brothers, John and David, attended local Topeka schools until 1960 when the family moved to Santa Cruz, where their father had acquired the Villa Del Mar Motel. The Pashman family moved into a residence on the motel grounds, and Stephen entered Santa Cruz High School. \r\n\r\nAfter graduating from high school in June 1962, Steven enrolled in Cabrillo College. Later he obtained employment at the California Tube Lab in Santa Cruz. Pashman was an avid sports enthusiast and soon became president of the Santa Cruz Sports Club. \r\n\r\nSteven Pashman entered the US Army in the fall of 1965 and was sent to a training facility. After completing basic and advanced individual training in late 1965, he was assigned to the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division serving in Vietnam. Pashman arrived in the central highland area of Vietnam on December 13, 1965, with transportation to his unit to be provided by plane. \r\n\r\nOn the morning of January 25, 1966, Private First Class Steven Mark Pashman and forty-one other troopers of the 7th Cavalry boarded a Fairchild Provider aircraft to be transported to a combat zone in the highlands. The lumbering C123 troop transport had just taken off from the An Khe staging area of the US 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division 250 miles north east of Saigon on the morning of January 25, 1966, when problems were encountered. A low 300-foot cloud cover had hidden a looming mountain in their path and before the pilot could maneuver the craft to avoid it the plane smashed into the hillside. The sound caused by the crash of the explosion shattered the early morning silence. The name Steven Pashman and the names of the other troopers aboard would be etched into the Vietnam Memorial Wall. \r\n\r\nThe remains of Private Steven M. Pashman were recovered and returned to Santa Cruz where a memorial mass was conducted at Holy Cross Church. Steven's remains were sent to Topeka, Kansas and interred in the Mt. Along with sisters, Gail and Joyce, he attended local elementary schools and later enrolled in Watsonville High School. He was remembered in school as loving to fish; he would do anything to be able to go fishing. He also enjoyed riding horses and the thrill of the rodeo. On one occasion he was even known to have ridden a bucking bull. Herring left high school before graduating. \r\n\r\nIn July 1967, Steven Herring enlisted in the US Army where he earned his high school diploma. He completed basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas, and advanced individual training at Ft. Huchuca, Arizona, where he qualified as an aircraft maintenance apprentice. \r\n\r\nOn January 6, 1968, he was sent to Vietnam and assigned as a door gunner on an UH-1C (Huey) helicopter. During his tour Steven received the Air Medal, which read: \r\n“Private First Class Herring distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a door gunner on a UH-ld helicopter involved in the insertion of elements of a Special Forces unit near Song Be. On the initial lift into the landing zone, a successful landing was made in spite of extreme natural hazards. On lift off from the landing zone, the flight began receiving heavy automatic weapons fire. Private First Class Herring began placing highly accurate suppressive fire on the enemy positions. His accurate and aggressive fire protected his aircraft and enabled it to fly to safety.”\r\n \r\nHerring's helicopter was providing support to elements of the 25th Infantry Division and on June 5, 1969, while flying behind enemy lines at about 150 feet, was hit by small arms fire and \"went in\" [crashed]. One of the craft's crewmen [believed to be Steven] was killed in the crash and the remaining three were killed by enemy troops. For his part in the action, Specialist Fourth Class Steven Wayne Herring was posthumously awarded the Air Medal with 24 Oakleaf clusters and the Purple Heart. A month before the fateful mission his mother had written the following poem and sent it to her son: \r\n“My Son in Viet Nam \r\nA mother's heart cannot be still, \r\nUntil she sees her boy climb o'er the hill. \r\nIn the bed at night I lie \r\nAnd see you, son, in the bunker, fire lighting the sky. \r\nI pray for God to keep your way clear, \r\nFor a worried mother is waiting for you, Dear. \r\nWe miss you, Son, and wait for the day you will return. \r\nWith boys like you around, those Charleys soon will \r\nlearn. \r\nDon't those Charleys know that they can't win? Our boys don't mess around, they really dig in. \r\nTake care, Son, in that land of Viet Nam, \r\nFor back here, we're all waiting, Dear, especially your \r\nMom. \r\nTo Steve, with love, from Mom \r\n\r\nSteven Herring's body was recovered and buried in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. \r\n\r\n(VVMW; VVVW; WHSM; WRP, June 11, 1969; Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, Helicopter UH-1C 66-00552, http://www.bluemax-ara-assoc.com/aircraft/66-00552.HTM, [16 September 2008]; Starlight Café; My Son in Vietnam, http://thestarlitecafe.com/poems/50/poem_8203039112.html, [16 September 2008]) \r\n \r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
