H. and Marie White. With his brother Gilbert and sisters, Joyce and Linda, he attended local schools in the Pajaro Valley. Leonard was a student at Watsonville High School between 1962 and 1965 and was described by his teachers as being \"pleasant, friendly and courteous.\" Baseball and football were Leonard's favorite sports during his high school years.\r\n\r\nOn August 29, 1967 Leonard White joined the US Army and completed basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas, followed by airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia. In February 1968, two months prior to his being deployed to Vietnam, he married Kathy. \r\n\r\nOn April 6, 1968, Pfc. White reported to Company D, 2nd Battalion of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, serving in Binh Dinh Province in South Vietnam. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to corporal. His paratrooper friend Charles Dewes remembered White: \r\n“Leonard was an airborne infantry soldier! He ... went on aerial combat assault missions ... pulled point ... went on night-time ambushes ... he had to be careful of deadly boo-b-traps ... he had to look out for snipers ... he went on search and destroy missions ... and slept and ate in a hot brutal jungle. Leonard was always willing to do his share and more under sustained fear and enormous physical demand. A young man willing to perform all these dangerous duties in a life and death environment and to be brave daily is no less than heroic. On June 13, 1968 Leonard White relieved another soldier of his position as R.T.O. because that soldier had succumbed to malaria. While on a search and destroy mission this outstanding (Sky Soldier) was caught in the center of a Viet Cong ambush and killed fighting his way out.”\r\n \r\nLeonard's body was returned to Watsonville and following a funeral, was buried with full military honors at the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. \r\n\r\n(VVWM; WHSM; WRP June 17, 1968 1:4, June 20, 1968 2:5; Charles De Wees Website, Leonard White Remembrance, http://www.173d.com/memorial/white.htm; [15 May 2007 Approx]) \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Larry and his sisters Catherine, Sherrie and Carrie grew up in Aromas, California, and attended local Pajaro Valley schools. In 1960 Dodd enrolled in Watsonville High School and remained there for the next four years. During that period, he played on the football team and was remembered by his friends as being a good-natured individual who was known for truthfulness and dependability. After graduating from high school in 1964, he enrolled in nearby Cabrillo College and followed a course of study to prepare him for the School of Forestry at the University of California at Davis. In December 1965 Larry married Jean Fowler. \r\n\r\nLarry Dodd was drafted into the US Army in January 1966 and the following February was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, to train as an infantryman. After completing basic and advanced individual training, he was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division preparing for departure to Vietnam. In September 1966, Larry said goodbye to his wife and family for the last time. \r\n\r\nUpon arrival in Vietnam Larry's company was deployed to the central highland area where they conducted patrols in search of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese units. His spirits were particularly high on May 26, 1967, as he began the day's patrol. Dodd had just heard that his wife had given birth to their daughter Ladean. He expected to join them in three more months when he rotated home. As Company C was moving along a jungle trail near the Cambodian border at Plei Doc in the central highlands it became strung out and was ambushed by North Vietnamese troops. Larry's company commander was the first to be killed in the fire-fight and Specialist Fourth Class Lawrence Rudin Dodd soon joined him. \r\nThe body of Larry Dodd, Watsonville's first Vietnam War combat casualty, was recovered and returned home for a funeral and internment in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. \r\n\r\nAt a later ceremony at Fort Ord Larry's widow, Jean, received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart that were awarded to him posthumously. \r\n\r\n(VVMW; WHSM; VVVW; USDVA; WRP June 1, 1967 1:3, June 3, 1967 2:2, September 29,1967 9:1; Cem Survey) \r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Warmbrodt. Information regarding his family and early life is not available; however, it is believed that he spent a portion of his formative years in Santa Monica, California. Following high school, Warmbrodt enrolled in the University of California in Santa Cruz with the Pioneer Class and graduated from Cowell College in 1968. \r\n\r\nWhile an undergraduate, he became a friend of UCSC Chancellor Dean McHenry, who in a 1987 interview, recalled his former student: \r\n“He [Jon] joined the Marines, went through boot camp, and despite a slight physical disability, a kind of club foot, a slightly club foot, he managed to get an exemption and went to Quantico [Virginia Marine Corps Training Center], and graduated a second lieutenant, [through] platoon leader's class. He was here Thanksgiving and visited with us [and] we took him out to dinner one night… [Before being shipped to Vietnam] He came by and picked up my last set of Marine uniforms; we're the same size.” \r\n\r\nLt. Jon Warmbrodt entered the service from Santa Monica, California and after completing the USMC platoon leader school, received orders to Southeast Asia. Jon arrived in Vietnam on December 3, 1968, and was assigned to L Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines serving in Quang Ngai province. When he joined his company, it was participating in Operation Bold Mariner, a sector sweep to locate enemy troops, equipment caches and to clear boobytrapped tunnels. \r\n\r\nIn January Second Lieutenant Jon Frederick Warmbrodt led his platoon into one final operation. For his leadership in that action he was posthumously awarded a Silver Star with a commendation that stated: \r\n\r\n“On 25 January 1969, elements of Company L were operating in Quang Ngai Province when the Marines moved into an enemy minefield. Observing that the unit had sustained several casualties in the initial explosions, Second Lieutenant Warmbrodt fearlessly rushed across the hazardous minefield to assist the wounded men. Realizing the necessity for removing the injured as soon as possible, he immediately requested medical evacuation aircraft and commenced directing corpsmen to treat the more seriously wounded. Prior to the arrival of the evacuation aircraft, he established a landing zone and disregarding the dangers involved, personally cleared a path to it, enabling the safe extraction of the seriously injured. Concerned with the safe removal of the remainder of his men from the minefield, he was directing a tank in clearing a path from the hazardous area when he was mortally wounded by the detonation of an enemy explosive device.”\r\n \r\nHis body was returned to California and following a military funeral, was interred in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. \r\n\r\n(VVMW; VVVW; USDVA; WRP May 7, 1970 2:3; SC Guard.com, Vietnam Weekly Casualties January 2, 1969 http://www. scguard.com/museum/docs/vietnam/1969/January1969. His brothers Carlos and Stephen and sisters Dora, Dorothy, Raquel and Yolanda joined him in the Inguillo family. The family later moved to Watsonville, California, and in September 1961 he entered Watsonville High School. After graduating in 1965, he enrolled in Cabrillo College and supplemented the cost of his education by working at the local Value Giant store. \r\n\r\nIn February 1968, Inguillo was inducted into the US Army and sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, for basic training, and later to Fort Polk, Louisiana, for advanced individual training. The army saw leadership potential in Inguillo and selected him for their Non-Commissioned Officer's Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. This course, commonly referred to as shake-and-bake because of the accelerated nature of the program, was designed to turn the most qualified enlisted men into NCOs in the shortest possible period. On September 24, 1968, Inguillo graduated with other members of Class 41-68, 76th Company and was promoted to sergeant. \r\n\r\nFollowing a leave and a temporary stateside assignment, John Inguillo left for Vietnam on January 8, 1969. On his arrival he became a squad leader in B Company, 4th Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Regiment serving in Tay Ninh Province. During his tour in \"Nam,\" he was involved in a number of combat operations, was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. His leadership also earned him a promotion to staff sergeant and he became a platoon sergeant. \r\n\r\nOn June 6, 1969, while on a patrol near the Nu Ba Den Mountains in Tay Ninh Province, Staff Sergeant John D. Inguillo's platoon came under enemy fire and he responded immediately. According to the official report accompanying his Silver Star award, \r\n“While on a reconnaissance in force mission, Company B encountered an enemy force of unknown size. In the initial exchange of fire, several men were wounded and pinned down in the enemy kill zone. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Sergeant Inguillo braved the intense hostile fire as he made his way to the wounded men. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Inguillo began placing effective fire upon the hostile positions. As the battle progressed, Sergeant Inguillo began treating the seriously wounded. He continued to aid the trapped men until he was fatally wounded.”\r\n \r\nSergeant Inguillo's body was recovered and returned to Watsonville for a military funeral and burial in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. \r\n\r\n(VVMW; VVVW; WHSM; WRP May 23, 1969 8:1, June 13, 1969 2:2,) \r\n\r\n \r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
