In response to the attacks, the Division was summoned to help secure the sprawling Tan Son Nhut Air Base. By 13 February, units of the Big Red One had engaged and defeated numerous Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers… On 7 April 1968, the Division embarked on the largest operation of the Vietnam War: Operation Toan Thang (Certain Victory), which involved all allied troops throughout the III Corps Tactical Zone. One of the primary missions of this two-part operation was to stop the infiltration of the enemy into the Saigon area.” \r\n\r\nOn June 14, 1968, while participating in Operation Toan Thang II, Specialist Fourth Class Richard Thomas Christy was killed in action by small arms fire. His mother's name was Lucy Arellano. Joining him in the family were his brothers Richard and Robert and his sister, Barbara. He spent his formative years in Ely, where he completed elementary school and entered high school. In 1964 the Arellano family moved to Santa Cruz and LeRoy transferred into Santa Cruz High School. He only attended classes at SCHS for about a year. \r\n\r\nIn 1965 LeRoy Arellano enlisted in the US Army. Following his basic and advanced individual training, he served tours of duty in Germany and Korea. In 1967 he received orders assigning him to Company C, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division serving in the Bong Song Plain of Binh Dinh Province of Vietnam. \r\n\r\nArellano arrived in Vietnam on May 17, 1967, and joined his regiment that was engaged in Operation Pershing. When the Tet New Year Offensive began, the 12th Cavalry Regiment moved to Quang Tri Province in the northern sector of South Vietnam. The regimental history of the 12th Cavalry chronicles the period of Arellano's service with it in Vietnam. \r\n\r\n“On April 19 1968, Operation Delaware was launched into the cloud shrouded A Shau Valley, near the Laotian border and 34 kilometers west of Hue. None of the Free World Forces had been in the valley since 1966, which was now being used as a way station on the supply route known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The first engagement was made by the 1st and 3rd Brigades. Under fire from mobile, 37mm cannon and 0.50 caliber machine guns, they secured several landing zones. For the next month the brigades scoured the valley floor, clashing with enemy units and uncovering huge enemy caches of food, arms, ammunition, rockets, and Russian made tank and bulldozers.”\r\n \r\nDuring the first quarter of 1968, Arellano made the fateful decision to extend his Vietnam tour for an additional twelve months. On June 22, 1968, while wrap-up operations were still underway, Sergeant LeRoy Fred Arellano was killed in action. His body was returned to Santa Cruz and buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart in military ceremonies conducted at Fort Ord on February 13, 1969. \r\n\r\n(VVMW; SCSn June 28, 1968 1:1, February 13, 1969 22:2; First Team. Armstrong arrived in Vietnam on February 13, 1968, and shortly thereafter was promoted to corporal. His abilities were soon recognized and he became his company commander's driver and radio operator. Warmbrodt. Information regarding his family and early life is not available; however, it is believed that he spent a portion of his formative years in Santa Monica, California. Following high school, Warmbrodt enrolled in the University of California in Santa Cruz with the Pioneer Class and graduated from Cowell College in 1968. \r\n\r\nWhile an undergraduate, he became a friend of UCSC Chancellor Dean McHenry, who in a 1987 interview, recalled his former student: \r\n“He [Jon] joined the Marines, went through boot camp, and despite a slight physical disability, a kind of club foot, a slightly club foot, he managed to get an exemption and went to Quantico [Virginia Marine Corps Training Center], and graduated a second lieutenant, [through] platoon leader's class. He was here Thanksgiving and visited with us [and] we took him out to dinner one night… [Before being shipped to Vietnam] He came by and picked up my last set of Marine uniforms; we're the same size.” \r\n\r\nLt. Jon Warmbrodt entered the service from Santa Monica, California and after completing the USMC platoon leader school, received orders to Southeast Asia. Jon arrived in Vietnam on December 3, 1968, and was assigned to L Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines serving in Quang Ngai province. When he joined his company, it was participating in Operation Bold Mariner, a sector sweep to locate enemy troops, equipment caches and to clear boobytrapped tunnels. \r\n\r\nIn January Second Lieutenant Jon Frederick Warmbrodt led his platoon into one final operation. For his leadership in that action he was posthumously awarded a Silver Star with a commendation that stated: \r\n\r\n“On 25 January 1969, elements of Company L were operating in Quang Ngai Province when the Marines moved into an enemy minefield. Observing that the unit had sustained several casualties in the initial explosions, Second Lieutenant Warmbrodt fearlessly rushed across the hazardous minefield to assist the wounded men. Realizing the necessity for removing the injured as soon as possible, he immediately requested medical evacuation aircraft and commenced directing corpsmen to treat the more seriously wounded. Prior to the arrival of the evacuation aircraft, he established a landing zone and disregarding the dangers involved, personally cleared a path to it, enabling the safe extraction of the seriously injured. Concerned with the safe removal of the remainder of his men from the minefield, he was directing a tank in clearing a path from the hazardous area when he was mortally wounded by the detonation of an enemy explosive device.”\r\n \r\nHis body was returned to California and following a military funeral, was interred in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. \r\n\r\n(VVMW; VVVW; USDVA; WRP May 7, 1970 2:3; SC Guard.com, Vietnam Weekly Casualties January 2, 1969 http://www. scguard.com/museum/docs/vietnam/1969/January1969.
