Federico's plans to return to Watsonville and marry were never realized.
Federico Alaniz Jr. was the oldest of the six children of Federico and Juanita Alaniz. Born in Mercedes, Texas, on March 11, 1948, Federico Jr. spent his first seven years in Texas with his brother Robert and sisters Esmeralda, Teresa, Rosa and Leticia, before moving to Watsonville in 1955. Upon arrival in the Pajaro Valley he was enrolled in the E. A. Hall School where he remained until 1964 when he entered Watsonville High School as a freshman. Federico did not finish high school but chose instead to enter the work force. He was employed by a local nursery and in the fields driving a truck.
Alaniz received his draft notice in April 1968, and in May reported to Fort Lewis, Washington, to begin his basic and advanced individual training. On September 22, he reported to Fort Riley, Kansas, where he joined the 21st Infantry Division as a senior wireman. He was then assigned to a brief tour of duty in Germany before being deployed to Vietnam.
Private Alaniz reported to Company B, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Division on April 27, 1969, and was attached to the 196/198 Lt. Infantry Regiment stationed in Quang Tin province. In March 1969, his unit moved to Landing Zone Professional in the mountains southwest of Tien Phuoc. There they conducted patrols in the vicinity of Firebase Maryann. During a patrol on June 13, 1969, Company B came under small arms gunfire that took the life of Private First Class Federico Alaniz Jr.
His body was returned; however, his final resting-place has not been identified. His awards include the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Sergeant Axton was the boss "from the back of the pilot's head to rear of the bird."
Edwin Everette Axton was born on April 13, 1948. The location of his birth and the names of his parents have not been found. Edwin had a sister, Gail; however, if he had other siblings, their names are not known. Robert Carter, living on Plateau Avenue in Santa Cruz, was identified as his stepfather and Robert Carter Jr. as his stepbrother. Axton attended local schools and entered Santa Cruz High School with the exiting class of 1966, but left school early. During the years prior to his entry into the service, Edwin married Karon and was employed by Pacific Cabinets and Granite Construction Company.
In April 1968 Axton was drafted into the US Army. He received basic training and advanced individual training that qualified him as a helicopter airframe repairman. Following a leave in Santa Cruz, he was sent to Vietnam on November 3, 1968, and arrived in Tay Ninh province where he joined HCC, 2nd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division.
Axton was initially assigned as a gunner aboard a Huey helicopter, but soon advanced to the position of crew chief. As crew chief he became the senior guy in the back that make all decisions from the back of the pilot's head to the rear of the bird. Floyd Holbrook, who served with Edwin later noted, "It was a privilege to fly with Axton. He taught me the ropes of becoming a crew chief. I will always remember him." Another individual who had reason to remember him was his pilot. When their helicopter crashed at Landing Zone Jamie in March 1969, Axton, who had escaped from the craft, went back to rescue the pilot.
On June 6, 1969, Specialist Fourth Class Edwin Everett Axton's helicopter was flying near the Cambodian border in support of 1st Cavalry ground operations when it was shot down. Axton was pulled from the craft and airlifted to Japan for medical attention; however, on June 11, 1969, he died from his
wounds.
His body was returned to Santa Cruz and following a military funeral, was interred in Santa Cruz Memorial Park. Edwin Axton was posthumously promoted to Sergeant and his other awards include the Air Medal and Purple Heart.

Sergeant Inguillo gave new meaning to the term Shake-and-Bake.
John Deogracias Inguillo, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Deogracias Inguillo, was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on August 10, 1947. His brothers Carlos and Stephen and sisters Dora, Dorothy, Raquel and Yolanda joined him in the Inguillo family. The family later moved to Watsonville, California, and in September 1961 he entered Watsonville High School. After graduating in 1965, he enrolled in Cabrillo College and supplemented the cost of his education by working at the local Value Giant store.
In February 1968, Inguillo was inducted into the US Army and sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, for basic training, and later to Fort Polk, Louisiana, for advanced individual training. The army saw leadership potential in Inguillo and selected him for their Non-Commissioned Officer's Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. This course, commonly referred to as shake-and-bake because of the accelerated nature of the program, was designed to turn the most qualified enlisted men into NCOs in the shortest possible period. On September 24, 1968, Inguillo graduated with other members of Class 41-68, 76th Company and was promoted to sergeant.
Following a leave and a temporary stateside assignment, John Inguillo left for Vietnam on January 8, 1969. On his arrival he became a squad leader in B Company, 4th Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Regiment serving in Tay Ninh Province. During his tour in "Nam," he was involved in a number of combat operations, was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. His leadership also earned him a promotion to staff sergeant and he became a platoon sergeant.
On June 6, 1969, while on a patrol near the Nu Ba Den Mountains in Tay Ninh Province, Staff Sergeant John D. Inguillo's platoon came under enemy fire and he responded immediately. According to the official report accompanying his Silver Star award,
“While on a reconnaissance in force mission, Company B encountered an enemy force of unknown size. In the initial exchange of fire, several men were wounded and pinned down in the enemy kill zone. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Sergeant Inguillo braved the intense hostile fire as he made his way to the wounded men. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Inguillo began placing effective fire upon the hostile positions. As the battle progressed, Sergeant Inguillo began treating the seriously wounded. He continued to aid the trapped men until he was fatally wounded.”
Sergeant Inguillo's body was recovered and returned to Watsonville for a military funeral and burial in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

"A mothers heart cannot be still" began a poem to Steven by his mother before his death.
Steven Wayne Herring was born in Watsonville, California on August 5, 1948, to Ruth and Cecil Herring. Along with sisters, Gail and Joyce, he attended local elementary schools and later enrolled in Watsonville High School. He was remembered in school as loving to fish; he would do anything to be able to go fishing. He also enjoyed riding horses and the thrill of the rodeo. On one occasion he was even known to have ridden a bucking bull. Herring left high school before graduating.
In July 1967, Steven Herring enlisted in the US Army where he earned his high school diploma. He completed basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas, and advanced individual training at Ft. Huchuca, Arizona, where he qualified as an aircraft maintenance apprentice.
On January 6, 1968, he was sent to Vietnam and assigned as a door gunner on an UH-1C (Huey) helicopter. During his tour Steven received the Air Medal, which read:
“Private First Class Herring distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a door gunner on a UH-ld helicopter involved in the insertion of elements of a Special Forces unit near Song Be. On the initial lift into the landing zone, a successful landing was made in spite of extreme natural hazards. On lift off from the landing zone, the flight began receiving heavy automatic weapons fire. Private First Class Herring began placing highly accurate suppressive fire on the enemy positions. His accurate and aggressive fire protected his aircraft and enabled it to fly to safety.”
Herring's helicopter was providing support to elements of the 25th Infantry Division and on June 5, 1969, while flying behind enemy lines at about 150 feet, was hit by small arms fire and "went in" [crashed]. One of the craft's crewmen [believed to be Steven] was killed in the crash and the remaining three were killed by enemy troops. For his part in the action, Specialist Fourth Class Steven Wayne Herring was posthumously awarded the Air Medal with 24 Oakleaf clusters and the Purple Heart. A month before the fateful mission his mother had written the following poem and sent it to her son:
“My Son in Viet Nam
A mother's heart cannot be still,
Until she sees her boy climb o'er the hill.
In the bed at night I lie
And see you, son, in the bunker, fire lighting the sky.
I pray for God to keep your way clear,
For a worried mother is waiting for you, Dear.
We miss you, Son, and wait for the day you will return.
With boys like you around, those Charleys soon will
learn.
Don't those Charleys know that they can't win? Our boys don't mess around, they really dig in.
Take care, Son, in that land of Viet Nam,
For back here, we're all waiting, Dear, especially your
Mom.
To Steve, with love, from Mom
Steven Herring's body was recovered and buried in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

"A horrible day, I was there that day," wrote Rick Lose, describing Phinn's death.
William Mark Phinn was born to Mr. and Mrs. William A. Phinn on June 25, 1948. Information regarding his early life, education or arrival in Santa Cruz County is not known.
In 1968 Phinn's family, which also consisted of his brother Michael, was living near the Capitola Mall in the mid-county area.
William Phinn enlisted in the US Marine Corps in May 1968, and was sent to Camp Pendleton, California for his basic training. While there a fellow recruit, Herb Grimaud, recalled that:
“Bill, me and 70 odd other civilians were brought together at MCRD [Marine Corps Recruit Depot] San Diego, April 1968 thru June 1968. It was Platoon 279 and we were the Series Honor Platoon. That means that out of three other platoons in our company that went through boot camp at the same time, we won almost all of the final competitions it took to graduate. Things like drill, rifle range, physical fitness, academic, first aid, etc. We "smoked" everybody. We were pretty raggedy when we first started but we were really squared away by the last few weeks of boot camp.”
Following basic training, Private Phinn completed school-of-infantry training at the San Diego facility and after graduating, returned home for a short leave before departing for Vietnam.
William Phinn arrived in Vietnam on October 5, 1968, and likely was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 26th Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division in Quang Nam province. * He participated in a number of sweeps during Operation Dewey Canyon prior to his final patrol.
Squad Leader, Rick Lose, recalled the events of March 18, 1969, the day of Phinn's death on the Vietnam Wall Internet Website.
“A horrible day, I was there that day. We were on a search and destroy mission all day [and] were hit hard [but] we did not take any losses. When we returned that afternoon LCpl Phinn was removing his frags [fragmentation grenades] from his ammo bag and it happen[ed] [that] a frag lost its pin and exploded killing four Marines. Phinn did not suffer at all he went peacefully to Jesus. He was a good marine and loved his country.”
Lance Corporal William Mark Phinn's body was recovered and returned to California for burial in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.
(VVMW; USDVA; SCSn March 21, 1969 1:1; Operation Dewey Canyon, http://recruitknowledge.com/pages/history/mch5.htm [16 September 2009])
* Note and possible correction:
Karl Franklin Wilkinson states "[Robert L. Nelson, author] notes that William Phinn was "likely assigned to 3rd Battalion, 26th Regiment, 3rd Marine Division... "that isn't accurate. He was in my platoon, 1st Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment... the most decorated Battalion in the Marine Corps! He was my closest friend during those hard days and always helped bring smiles and laughter to all of us."

In 2007 Ray was still remembered by his Brownwood buddy, Alan Hawkins, who continues to tend his grave.
Raymond Rodriguez Delgado was born on December 28, 1949, to Nicolas and Inez Rodriguez in Brown County, Texas. The names of Raymond's siblings are not known. He was raised in the community of Brownwood, where he attended elementary and high school. In the spring of 1967 he moved to Watsonville, California, and enrolled in Watsonville High School. In November of that year Delgado dropped out of school.
Raymond Delgado enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1968, following his eighteenth birthday. He received his basic and school-of-infantry training at Camp Pendleton near San Diego and in June, qualified as a marine rifleman. On July 14 he joined Company C, 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division located at the Vandergrift combat base near Ca Lu, Quang Tri Province.
In January 1969 the 3rd Marine Division reinforced the 9th Marine Division in Operation Dewey Canyon, a final push to break up North Vietnamese supply lines and installations in the A Shau Valley. Company C participated in the many sweeps that took place through March.
Delgado, who had moved up from rifleman to team leader, was on a search-and-clear patrol on March 1, 1969, when his unit was attacked and came under heavy mortar fire. A fragment of a mortar round struck Lance Corporal Raymond Rodriguez Delgado in the head resulting in his death. His body was recovered and returned to Brownwood, Texas, for burial.

Robert remained close to his brother John in death as well as in life.
Robert Douglas Christiansen was born in Santa Cruz, California, on May 3, 1949, to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald B. Christiansen. He was raised in the family home on Pine Flat Road in nearby Bonny Doon, California. It is unclear whether his brothers John, Michael, Bruce and Richard and sisters Mary, Donna and Janet all lived together at that location at the same time. He attended local elementary schools and may have attended San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton. During his time in Santa Cruz County, Christiansen worked at Spivey's, a popular local restaurant, and at the Dream Inn Hotel.
About 1968, Robert Christiansen moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he joined the US Marine Corps. He received his basic and school-of-infantry training at Camp Pendleton, California and qualified as an infantry rifleman.
Lance Corporal Christiansen arrived in Vietnam on January 11, 1969, and was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division stationed at the Da Krong Valley base in Quang Tri Province. After only a month with his unit, Robert's company received orders to participate in Operation Dewey Canyon.
“Operation Dewey Canyon was the last major offensive by the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. It took place from January 22 through March 18, 1969 and involved a sweep of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) dominated A Shau Valley by the 9th Marine Regiment reinforced by elements of the 3rd Marine Regiment.”
On February 21, 1969, while on a patrol thirty-four miles south of Vandergrift Combat Base near Ca Lu, Lance Corporal Robert Douglas Christiansen suffered fatal wounds to the head from enemy mortar fire. His body was recovered and returned to California where he was buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in the plot next to his brother, former Army Private John Todd Christiansen, who had died July 18, 1966, after leaving the service.

A soldier survived the jungles of Vietnam only to be brought down on the streets of Roy.
William LeRoy Carter was born on July 10, 1949, in Bakersfield, California, to William and Dulcie Carter. The Carter family also consisted of sons Ronald, Donald, Gary, Thomas, Gerry and daughters Leta Fay, Cora Wyonia, Sondra and Pamela. At a very early age the family moved to the Pajaro Valley where they settled and where William attended local schools.
In 1966 William Carter joined the US Army and after receiving basic and advanced individual training, was sent to Vietnam. His unit has not been identified; however, upon completing his tour in January 1967, he rotated back to Fort Lewis, Washington.
William Carter was killed when he was struck by a car at Roy, Washington, near Ft. Lewis, on February 16, 1969. His body was returned to Watsonville where full military honors were conducted over his gravesite in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Alfred Alan Gates was born in San Jose, California, on September 26, 1948, to Alfred and Jean Gates. His siblings included brothers Bill, Tim, and Gary and sisters Paula and Alana. The date that the Gates family moved to Santa Cruz County is not known, but in 1966 Alfred was a student at San Lorenzo Valley High School. Following graduation in 1967, Gates married and moved to San Jose with his wife, Glenda. In San Jose he entered a sheet metal apprenticeship program.
In May 1968, while living in Sunnyvale, California, Alfred Gates received his draft notice. Following basic and advanced training, he returned home for a brief leave before being deployed to Southeast Asia.
On October 7, 1968, Alfred was sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade serving in Quang Tin province.
During the 1968 Tet New Year offensive, the 6th Infantry was moved to the northern portion of the province to assist the US Marine Corps in containing the insurgents. According to Gates' platoon leader, Norm Boxly,
“Company A was assigned to patrols of the Rocket Pocket off Chu Lai to try and find the VC and/or NVA 22mm rocket squads. We ran day patrols very seldom and night ambushes all the time. At resupply in the afternoon we would get an overlay showing our ambush for the night or get it called in code over the radio.”
During a patrol that Company A was undertaking on February 7, 1969, Private First Class Alfred Alan Gates was killed in action by small arms fire. His body was recovered and returned to California where he was buried in the Golden Gate Cemetery in San Bruno. Gates was posthumously promoted to corporal and received the Purple Heart.

A ride home to the air base turned into disaster.
Robert L. Dinapoli was born in New York to Mr. and Mrs. Sal Dinapoli on June 19, 1947. At an early age Robert, along with his parents, his brother Ted and his sister Sally Ann, moved to San Jose, California. The family remained in San Jose until about 1958 when they moved to Santa Cruz and settled into a home on Branciforte Avenue. Dinapoli completed the remainder of his elementary education locally and in 1961 enrolled in Santa Cruz High School.
After his high school graduation in 1965, Robert Dinapoli enlisted in the US Airforce for a four-year tour. His basic training took place at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. In 1966 he was assigned to the 69th Recon Tech Squadron stationed at Yakota Air Base west of Tokyo.
After his arrival in Japan, Dinapoli began working in the classified information section and by the end of 1968, had risen to the rank of sergeant. On February 1, 1969, Sergeant Robert L. Dinapoli, along with two other airmen went into Tokyo for an evening liberty. After returning by train to Yakota, they were offered a ride back to the base by a young Japanese boy. Enroute, the teen-age driver hit a utility pole killing Robert and his companions.
Sergeant Dinapoli's body was returned to Santa Cruz and buried in Oakwood Memorial Park.
