When Steven boarded a US Air Force C123, little did he realize that he would be involved in one of the worst air disasters in the war.
Steven Mark Pashman, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Pashman, was born in Topeka, Kansas, on September 25, 1944. He and his two brothers, John and David, attended local Topeka schools until 1960 when the family moved to Santa Cruz, where their father had acquired the Villa Del Mar Motel. The Pashman family moved into a residence on the motel grounds, and Stephen entered Santa Cruz High School.
After graduating from high school in June 1962, Steven enrolled in Cabrillo College. Later he obtained employment at the California Tube Lab in Santa Cruz. Pashman was an avid sports enthusiast and soon became president of the Santa Cruz Sports Club.
Steven Pashman entered the US Army in the fall of 1965 and was sent to a training facility. After completing basic and advanced individual training in late 1965, he was assigned to the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division serving in Vietnam. Pashman arrived in the central highland area of Vietnam on December 13, 1965, with transportation to his unit to be provided by plane.
On the morning of January 25, 1966, Private First Class Steven Mark Pashman and forty-one other troopers of the 7th Cavalry boarded a Fairchild Provider aircraft to be transported to a combat zone in the highlands. The lumbering C123 troop transport had just taken off from the An Khe staging area of the US 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division 250 miles north east of Saigon on the morning of January 25, 1966, when problems were encountered. A low 300-foot cloud cover had hidden a looming mountain in their path and before the pilot could maneuver the craft to avoid it the plane smashed into the hillside. The sound caused by the crash of the explosion shattered the early morning silence. The name Steven Pashman and the names of the other troopers aboard would be etched into the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
The remains of Private Steven M. Pashman were recovered and returned to Santa Cruz where a memorial mass was conducted at Holy Cross Church. Steven's remains were sent to Topeka, Kansas and interred in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Sherman Ray Taylor was born on October 9, 1952, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, to Mr. and Mrs. Herman E. Taylor. In addition to Sherman, the Taylor's had five other sons Elmer, Marvin, Harold, Larry and Rand, along with two daughters, Mary and Ann. At an early age the family moved to Santa Cruz County where Sherman attended local schools. He possibly attended Santa Cruz High School; however, there is no record of his completing secondary education at that school.
In 1969 Taylor enlisted in the US Army and after receiving basic training, he obtained additional individual training to qualify as an electronic maintenance specialist. The army facilities where he served prior to being sent to Southeast Asia are not known. On January 19, 1971, Sherman arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to a unit serving in the Ninh Thuan province.
Military records are incomplete as to the cause of Sherman Taylor's death, which occurred on February, 26, 1971. His body was returned home and following a military funeral, was buried in Watsonville's Pioneer cemetery.

Sergeant Calcote survived four tours as a Green Beret in Vietnam only to suffer an accidental gunshot wound when he came home.
Roy C. Calcote was born in Santa Cruz, California, on March 24, 1943, to Mr. and Mrs. David Calcote. The Calcote family also included another son, David Jr., and a daughter, Ruby. Roy, who was also known as Cim, grew up in Santa Cruz County and was educated in local elementary schools. During his high school years, he attended both Santa Cruz and San Lorenzo Valley high schools.
In 1960 Calcote left school early, enlisted in the US Navy and received boot camp training at the US Naval Training Center in San Diego. At the completion of his four-year tour he was honorably discharged from the Navy.
After briefly returning to civilian life, Roy enlisted in the US Army. During basic training, he volunteered for Special Forces training. With the successful completion of that program he was issued his Green Beret.
“The United States Army Special Forces, known in the United States simply as Special Forces or SF, and informally known as 'Green Berets,' is an elite special operations force of the US Army trained for guerrilla warfare, unconventional warfare, and special operations. Its primary mission is to train and assist foreign indigenous forces.
The main SF unit in South Vietnam was the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) [it] earned seventeen Congressional Medals of Honor in Vietnam, making it the most prominently decorated unit for its size in that conflict.
Special Forces personnel also played key roles in the highly secret Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) Studies and Observation Group.”
During the Vietnam War, Roy Calcote was the recipient of two Bronze Stars for bravery and three Purple Hearts. When he returned, he married Elaine and they had two daughters, Cimberly and Shaunda. The family later established their permanent residence in Porterville, California.
On March 27, 1971, while he was still serving in the army, Calcote was the victim of an accidental gunshot wound that required hospitalization. While being treated at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco on April 10, 1971, Staff Sergeant Roy Calcote died. His remains were brought to Santa Cruz for a funeral and burial in Oakwood Memorial Park.

Four months after the death of their son Welton, the King family received another jolt.
Ronald Runyan King was born on November 1, 1926 , in Amity, Arkansas, to Mr. and Mrs. C. F. King. The King family consisted of another son, Welton (who was also among the county's war dead) and daughters Jo Ann and Jane. The family later moved to the California central valley community of Merced, where Ronald attended local schools.
Following graduation from Merced High School in 1945, Ronald King entered the US Army and served until the conclusion of World War II. After he was discharged, he returned to his parent's home in Santa Cruz, California, and enrolled in nearby San Jose State College.
After graduating from college, about 1950, King entered the US Air Force and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Following the Korean War, he attended the Air Force Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Base, Alabama, and then served in England for the next three years. Upon his return to the United States, King completed an advanced training program at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, and then received orders to Southeast Asia.
After Major King departed for Thailand in 1967, his wife Margaret and their four sons John, Richard, William and Robert moved into a home in San Jose, California. Upon his arrival at the Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, King was assigned to the 333rd Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing.
On October 3, 1967, Ronald King had just completed a reconnaissance mission to North Vietnam aboard his F105D fighter when he ran out of fuel over the Gulf of Tonkin. He was reported to have ejected from the aircraft, parachuted into heavy seas and drowned by waves that reached twenty feet in height. His body was never recovered. Major Ronald Runyan King was posthumously promoted to Lt. Colonel and a memorial service in his honor was conducted at the Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Bruno on October 8, 1967.

Christmas Eve 1966 was a sad occasion in the Harold Johnson household; they had just buried their son Ronald.
Ronald Joe Johnson was born in Kings County, California, on September 24, 1947, to Mr. and Mrs. Harold J. Johnson. Ronald's family included brothers Douglas, Gary and Mark and sisters Victoria and Jill. Ronald was raised in Soquel, California, attended local schools and was active in little league baseball. He and his teammates prided themselves in having won the 1960 little league championship for their community. In 1962 he entered Soquel High School, where he was remembered by one of his classmates as being a "nice person and a friend that loved cars." It may have been the love of cars that influenced his after-school employment at a local Chevron service station.
In early 1966 Ronald Johnson enlisted in the US Army and received basic and advanced individual training at an unspecified camp. After completing his training, Johnson was sent to Vietnam. Upon his arrival on April 8, 1966, he was assigned to A Company, 12th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division.
In June, the army began Operations Irving and Thayer to clear the North Vietnam Army from Binh Dinh Province, and Johnson found himself in the thick of the fighting. The 1st Cavalry's Internet history recalls that,
“In the opening phases of Operation "Thayer I," enemy elements of the 7th and 8th battalions, 18th North Vietnamese Army Regiment had been reported in the village of Hoa Hoi [Binh Dinh Province]. The 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, in the face of strong heavy resistance, deployed to encircle the village. On 02 October, B Company was the first to be air assaulted into the landing area 300 meters east of the village. Immediately, the units came under intense small arms and mortar fire. A Company landed to the southwest and began a movement northeast to the village. In the meantime, C Company landed north of the village and began moving south. By this time A and B Companies had linked up and established positions which prevent the enemy from slipping out of the village during the night. [The12th Cav remained in that area until approximately December 27th.]”
During the fighting that ensued on December 17, 1966, Specialist Fourth Class Ronald Joe Johnson was killed by small arms fire. His body was recovered, returned to Santa Cruz and buried in Holy Cross Cemetery on Christmas Eve Day, 1966.

Rocky was one month short of a leave in Japan when his firebase was overrun.
Rocky Yukio Hirokawa, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Ichiro Hirokawa, was born on May 6, 1949, in Denver Colorado. His father, who was in the farming and poultry business, moved the family to Torrance, California, where Rocky entered high school. Ichiro's work brought the Hirokawa family to the Pajaro Valley in March 1966 and Rocky enrolled in Watsonville High School. In high school his friends remembered him "as a very quiet and helpful student," and "as a person easy to get along with and nice to be around." His father's work caused his parents to move to Gardena, California, during his senior year; however, Rocky remained at the Watsonville home of his aunt in order to finish school. Following graduation from high school in June 1967, he re-joined his parents in Southern California.
Hirokawa was drafted into the US Army in September 1968 and sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington. During his basic and advanced training, the army detected leadership potential in him and sent him to their NCO Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. A Combat Leadership NCO Course at Fort Ord, California, followed.
On September 2,1969, Rocky was sent to Vietnam and assigned as a squad leader in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Air Cav. Division. He participated in a number of patrols and missions and earned his first Bronze Star on January 9, 1970, in Phuoc Long Province. The citation read:
“When his unit became engaged, with a determined enemy force, with disregard for his own safety, he [Hirokawa] exposed himself to the hostile fire as he moved forward to the point of heaviest contact. He then began placing a heavy volume of suppressive fire on the enemy positions, to cover the medics while they treated the wounded.”
On March 8, 1970, Hirokawa and his platoon were participating in the Parrot's Beak March in Tay Ninh Province when they were ambushed.
“Sergeant Hirokawa immediately and with complete disregard for his own safety, charged through the intense enemy fire, setting up his machine gun and directing the suppressive fire of his men on the enemy positions. Although wounded, he courageously moved on, issuing orders and supervising his men. When another barrage of enemy mortar rounds landed near him, he received several pieces of shrapnel, but continued to lead his men on the attack.”
Over half of Company C was med-evacuated but it was too late for Rocky. His friend Robert (Cowboy) Estep, who was also wounded, moved over and offered comfort to Sergeant Hirokawa before he died.
His body was recovered and following a funeral service in Gardena, was buried in San Pedro, California. In addition to receiving a second Bronze Star, Rocky Hirokawa received the Purple Heart for this action.

A different messenger of death cut the military career of Robert Rodriguez short.
Robert Rodriguez was born on April 16, 1931, in Watsonville, California, to Mr. and Mrs. David Rodriguez. Robert was raised in a large household, which included his brothers Edward, David, Richard, Daniel, Gilbert and Tone, along with sisters Angela, Helen, Amelia, Aurora and Patricia. He attended local schools in the Pajaro Valley before entering the US Air Force during the Korean War. While serving in the Air Force, he married Maria. During their marriage, a daughter Terry and son Manuel were born to the couple.
During his seventeen years in military service, the family lived at a number of Air Force facilities, but intended to retire in Watsonville. Early in 1968 Rodriguez was diagnosed as having leukemia, which moved up the Rodriquez family retirement plans. Maria and the children settled into a home on Amesti Road in Watsonville and Robert began treatment at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco.
On July 5, 1968 Sergeant Robert Rodriguez lost his fight and succumbed to cancer. He was returned home and buried in the Watsonville Catholic cemetery.

Visions of the movie Bridge Over the River Kwai may have entered Robert's mind as he stepped into that river to go bathing.
Robert L. Foster was born in Colorado on January 6, 1941, to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Foster. He was raised and lived in that state until about 1962 or 1963 when he arrived in Santa Cruz County, California. He and his wife, Betty, moved into the Live Oak district of the county and settled into a residence on 34th Avenue near Pleasure Point by the ocean.
It is not known when Robert Foster entered the US Army; however, by 1967 he had completed his initial training and risen in rank to specialist fifth class. Foster was assigned to the 44th Engineering Group (Construction) at Kanchanaburi, Thailand.
“In the jungles of Thailand, the US Army supported major activities for both the Vietnam War and the secret war in Laos. The 44th Engineer Group was assigned the task to build roads and a support (logistics) network based in the plateau region of central Thailand known as Korat.”
On January 22, 1968, Robert Foster's wife received news from the Sixth US Army Headquarters in San Francisco that her husband had drowned while bathing in a river near Kanchanaburi, Thailand. That river is likely the River Kwai that runs through Kanchanaburi.
Foster's body was recovered and returned to Santa Cruz where a funeral with full military honors was conducted followed by interment in Oakwood Memorial Park.
