She received three years' comprehensive nursing education, with a specialty in medical-surgical nursing at Philadelphia General Hospital. From June 1948 to December 1952, she served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. Her first military assignment was at St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York. Six months later, she was assigned to Oakland Navy Hospital in California. Promoted to junior grade, Robertson was due for overseas duty, but was given an option to study dietetics at George Washington University in DC., because of her father's terminal illness. After completing the program, she was reassigned to Oakland, working as a dietitian to educate enlisted men in weight control behaviors. Robertson reached the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG). She was married to a naval offer and released from military service with her first pregnancy. Once her children were school-aged, she went back to school to earn a B.A. in education and a M.S in medical-surgical nursing. She held various positions in nursing, teaching and consulting at organizations such as San Mateo County Hospital, Stanford University, California Department of Health, Santa Cruz Visiting Nurses Association and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Machado attended local schools and entered Santa Cruz High School, where he was active in sports. While in high school, he joined the US Army Reserve's 422nd MP Company and served in that unit for two years. Machado graduated from Santa Cruz High School with the February 1951 class. \r\n\r\nLeRoy enlisted in the US Navy in July 1951. He was sent to San Diego for boot camp and after completing his basic and advanced training, was assigned to the US Naval Base in Sasebo, Japan. He remained at that station performing administrative work for the next fifteen months. After completing his far eastern tour, LeRoy returned to California and on February 20, 1954, reported to a naval facility at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. \r\n\r\nIn March 1954, Machado was sent to Bainbridge, Maryland, where he entered a twelve-week training program at the navy's personnel school. Following completion of that school, he returned to Santa Cruz for a thirty-day leave before reporting aboard the USS Hooper Island in Southern California. \r\n\r\nOn the night of December 1, 1954, while in San Gabriel, California, LeRoy Machado drove a vehicle into the rear of a truck laden with potatoes and was killed in the ensuing crash. During his tour on the Bennington, his career came to an end. \r\nOn the 26th of May 1954 the Bennington was steaming off the Atlantic Coast in Naragansett Bay preparing for carrier qualifications. Last minute preparations for flight trials were being made, and plane crews were busy making final checks. The ship's log indicates that the first evidence of trouble was noted at 0610 hours when there was a report of smoke. At 0611 hours there was a notation of two or three explosions taking place. The ship suffered massive damage in the forward third, with sheets of flame rising during the explosions. 102 men lost their lives within seconds of the explosion and over one hundred others were seriously injured.”\r\n \r\nThe cause of disaster was later attributed to a launching catapult that exploded. Initially under the operational control of Twentieth AF, after July 8, 1950, it was attached to FEAF Bomber Command (Provisional). The first B-29 unit in the war, the group on June 28 attacked North Korean storage tanks, marshalling yards, and armor. In the first two months, it flew more than six hundred sorties, supporting UN ground forces by bombing enemy troops, vehicles, and such communications points as the Han River bridges. In the north, its targets included an oil refinery and port facilities at Wonsan, a railroad bridge at Pyongyang, and an airfield at Yonpo. After UN ground forces pushed the communists out of South Korea, the 19th BG turned to strategic objectives in North Korea, including industrial and hydroelectric facilities. It also continued to attack bridges, marshalling yards, supply centers, artillery and troop positions, barracks, port facilities, and airfields.”\r\n \r\nOn July 7, 1953, Captain Charles Frederick McGuire was serving as a crewmember of a B-29A Superfortress bomber that was returning from a bombing mission. The bomber crashed during the landing approach to Pohang Air Base. His remains were recovered, returned to California and interred in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. \r\n\r\n(NARA2; ABMC; USDVA; Cemetery headstone inscription; AFHRA/IT, 19th Medium Group, http://afhra.maxwell.af.mil/ korean_war/usaf_organizations_korea/medium_bombardment. \r\nhtml, [16 September 2008]) \r\n \r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Taylor's after burners failed to re-ignite. \r\n\r\nRoy Taylor was born on August 22, 1929, to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Taylor. His birth location has not been identified. The Taylor family, which also included their son William, lived in Corralitos and was active in the All Saints Episcopal Church in Watsonville. Roy spent his formative years in the Pajaro Valley, was educated in local schools and graduated from Watsonville High School in June 1947. He enrolled in Hartnell College in Salinas in the same year and remained there until 1950. \r\n\r\nIn April 1950, Roy Taylor entered the naval air cadet program. When he graduated from the pre-flight training program at Pensacola, Florida, in August 1950, he was named the outstanding student and judged, \"the best all-around man of his class in the academic, military and physical courses.\" He continued his naval cadet education until October 1951 when he was commissioned an ensign and received his wings. \r\n\r\nTaylor was then sent to advanced flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas, carrier training at Pensacola Florida, and jet aircraft instruction at Kingsville, Texas. In March 1952 Ensign Taylor was assigned to Miramar Naval Air Station in California. \r\n\r\nRoy arrived Korea in September 1952 and served as a F9F-5 Pantherjet fighter pilot with Fighter Squadron 122 aboard the USS Oriskany. \r\n\r\nOn April 13, 1953, Lt. (jg) Roy Taylor was returning to the Oriskany after escorting a photography airplane on a mission in Korea, when his plane went down. Lt. Cmdr. J.W. Wyrick, his commanding officer, provided details on the accident. \r\n“They commenced their letdown at 14,000 feet over the ship preparing to land and at 11,000 feet Roy called the photo pilot, on his radio and told him his engine had flamed out. The photo pilot asked Roy where he was and Roy told him that he was just behind and above him. The photo pilot, Lt. J.F. Grosser, then swung out and followed Roy down. Roy made no further radio transmissions, apparently having turned his radio off in order to conserve its energy for his attempted restarts. From 11,000 feet he had ample time to air restart and then use the cartridge igniter for two more attempts. We do not know why the engine flamed out or why it failed to restart. We are sure that he attempted both means of restarting however. He jettisoned his cockpit canopy at about 1,000 feet preparatory to a water landing. \r\nHe apparently handled his landing well as he flared out just above the water and let the plane settle in as it slowed down. When he hit the water the fuselage of the plane broke off just forward of the wing, skipped across the water a short distance and sank immediately. The shock of hitting was sufficient at least to have rendered Roy unconscious. The remainder of the plane floated for about a minute, but the two planes that followed him down could find no sign of Roy as the cockpit was in the part that sank.”\r\n \r\nDestroyers and helicopters were immediately dispatched to rescue Roy but there was no sign of his plane or body. Lt. (jg) Roy Taylor was officially listed as missing and presumed dead. His awards include the Air Medal, with two Gold Stars. \r\n\r\n(ABMC; DANFS, USS Oriskany CV-34; WRP August 28, 1950 1:6, October 3, 1951 10:3, January 3, 1952 9:3, March 27, 1952 16:1, April 14, 1953 1:1, April 29, 1953 10:1)\r\n"]]]]]],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
