Local News Index
Description
An account of the resource
An index to newspaper and periodical articles from a variety of Santa Cruz publications.
It is a collection of over 87,000 articles, primarily from the <em>Santa Cruz Sentinel</em>, that have been clipped and filed in subject folders. While these articles of local interest range in date from the early 1900's to the present, most of the collection and clipped articles are after roughly 1960. There is an ongoing project to scan the complete articles and include them in this collection.<br /><br />Also included are more than 350 full-text local newspaper articles on films and movie-making and on the Japanese-American internment.<br /><br /> In addition, this is an online index for births, deaths, and personal names from <em>The Mountain Echo.</em> The complete print index is available at the library. For more information see <a href="https://history.santacruzpl.org/omeka/items/show/134957#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0">The Mountain Echo</a>.
Most of the indexed articles are available on microfilm in the Californiana Room or in the clipping files in the Local History Room at the Downtown branch. Copies of individual articles may be available by contacting the Reference Department - <a href="https://www.santacruzpl.org/contact/">Ask Us.<br /><br /></a>
<p></p>
While there is some overlap between this index and <a href="https://www.santacruzpl.org/historic_newspaper_index/">the Historic Newspaper Index</a><a> (approximately 1856-1960), they are different databases and are searched separately.</a>

Ansel Adams Photographs of the Salz Tannery (1955)
Ansel Adams and Ansley Salz, the owner of the Salz tannery, were longtime friends. Salz donated his Cadillac to Adams.
The Cadillac appears in many of Ansel Adams' more famous photographs. Ansley Salz's grandson Jeremy Lezin recalls
that Ansel Adams' greatest trick at Salz family parties was to play marches on Ansley's piano by rolling an orange over
the keys.
In 1955 Ansley Salz asked Ansel Adams to photograph the leather-making
process at the Salz Tannery. The photographs were not taken to mark any
particular occasion but did continue a tradition of photographing the
tannery and its skilled employees. The clarity of the black and white
photographs document leather manufacturing from a Santa Cruz landmark
industry and a by-gone era.
Jeremy Lezin and the Lezin family have generously allowed the Library to
display the images on our Website, as part of our Local History Photograph
Collection. The images remain the property of the Lezin family. They may
not be downloaded or reproduced in any way without the expressed,
written permission of the Lezin family and the Ansel Adams Trust. The
images may be viewed in our Local History Photograph Collection.
More photographs of the Salz tannery and its predecessor, the San Lorenzo Tannery, are available in the Local History
Collection.

Ansley Kullman Salz with a leather sample
Description
An account of the resource
Ansley Kullman Salz holding a sample of the leather made by his company, the A. K. Salz Tannery in Santa Cruz, California. Ansley bought the San Lorenzo Tannery in 1917 with a relative named Herman Kullman and renamed it the Kullman Salz Tannery. The partnership was dissolved and the Kullman Salz Tannery closed in 1929 due to a failing economy. Ansley Kullman Salz purchased the tannery outright that year and named it the A.K. Salz Tannery. A concert violinist, Ansley thought of leather making as an art form. In so doing, he created the legendary "California Saddle Leather TM" which became an industry standard in the 1950's. A.K. Salz Tannery remained a premier West Coast Tannery until its closure in December, 2001.
