When he was two years old his family\nmoved to Santa Cruz, and at the age of 13 he became one of Santa Cruz' first local surfers. In wood shop class\nat Mission Hill Junior High he and his friends made their first surfboards, or paddleboards as they were called\nin the '30s. They cost about $13 to make.\nDuring my interview with Harry I gained a new perspective on surfing.\nAs he described life without wetsuits or leashes, I realized how much\nwe take these luxuries for granted in the '90s. When he talked about\nthe lack of crowds in the water I wished the clock could be turned back\n60 years.\nNevertheless, times change and fortunately Harry is here to tell us\nabout the good ol' days.\n\nTeenage Harry Mayo Surfing at Cowells\n\nOLM:\nCan you describe what it was like surfing in Santa Cruz in the 1930s and '40s?\nHarry:\nA group of us started surfing in 1936, and started a formal surf club in 1938. We started by keeping our boards\nin a barn behind Buster Steward's house about one block up Bay Avenue from West Cliff Drive. In 1938 the\nJunior Chamber of Commerce helped us to build a board-house. We kept our boards right down there on the\nbeach. This was down at the foot of where the Dream Inn is now.\n\n1\n\nSanta Cruz Surfing Club, June 1941\n\nLeft to right: Don \"Bosco\" Patterson, Harry \"Little Harry\" Murray, Rich Thompson, Alex Hokamp, Blake \"Tom Blake\"\nTurner, Bill Grace, Dave \"Buster\" Steward, Fred Hunt, Harry Mayo, Alex \"Pinky\" Pedemonte, Tommy \"Butter Cup\"\nRoussel.\n\nOLM:\nWhat kind of equipment did you use?\nHarry:\nWe made our own paddleboards, there were no commercial boardmakers at that time. They were called\npaddleboards because they paddled very nicely; they stayed on top of the water. They paddled better than\nthe boards that you see now. We called them paddleboards but that's what we surfed on.\nInside they had a hollow construction with ribs going across either notches or holes in the ribs. You needed\nthis because they all leaked and you had a drain plug in order to drain them. We made them in a shop at\nschool. Most of them were made out of redwood sides that could be bent a little bit, a pine nose and tail\nblock, and three-ply tops and bottoms of plywood. We made some odd-ball ones at Mission Junior High.\nThen when we were at Santa Cruz High there were some guys that\ncame over from San Jose State (originally from Southern\nCalifornia) and they brought over some boards that were better\nand we started making them like that.\n\nSurfers headed back to the board house, June 1941 Photograph taken by Ed Webber\n\n2\n\nOLM:\nDid anything dangerous ever happen to you or anyone else with such a large board?\nHarry:\nYes, I got hit one time right near the shore and it caught me across\nmy chest and before I could swim ashore my chest muscles were\nalready tightening up. Some of the ladies that tried to surf in those\ndays would get hit once in a while and get black and blue marks.\nTheir mother and fathers would get on them and that's why there\nweren't too many women surfing. Plus they couldn't pack the boards\nlike they can now because of the weight. We'd put them in the water\nfor them and they'd stay in at Cowells and surf.\nOLM:\nDid you use anything comparable to a wetsuit before they came out?\nPat Collings (left), Shirley Templeman (right)\n\nHarry:\n\nWetsuits came out around 1952. The closest thing to a wetsuit is what Buster Steward and another guy Bill\nGrace used to wear. They were old sweaters with the arms cut off. I didn't like to wear them. They got them at\nthe Salvation Army and Goodwill and cut the sleeves off and wore them like a vest.\nOLM:\nHow often would you be able to surf?\nHarry:\nWe would go for an early surf then go to Father Devine's on Front and Laurel Streets for a 15 cent breakfast.\nHowever, there were many a day that the surf was up but we didn't surf because we all had jobs. With some\nof our jobs we didn't even have weekends off.\nI did all kinds of work. I first started selling newspapers when I was a kid. Then I started to work for Charles W.\nStone down at the beach doing some garden work and helping to do repairs all during the winter. He owned a\nbunch of cabins and cottages at the beach.\nWhen war came I went into the Coast Guard and I got stationed right back here in Santa Cruz. We had\nport/star-board duty-- 24 hrs. on, 24 hrs. off-- so every other day we had off to surf.\nOLM:\nWhat would you have considered a crowd out in the water and what do you think about the crowds today?\nHarry:\nOne time at Cowells we counted 33 out on a weekend, and that was crowded. Today the crowds would be\namazing and so would the competition. But they (surfers today) do really well because they've got those\nboards and they can whip them around and hotdog them. They don't have to worry about it if they fall in the\nwater because they've got the wetsuits. They're also not worried about losing their boards. We used to catch a\n3\n\nride off of what they call Indicator now and ride it all the way back to the beach. That was the ride of the day,\ncatching it all the way to the beach, not doing what they do now!\nOLM:\nWhat was the feeling like out in the water between the surfers? Did you feel that there was a lot of\ncamaraderie?\nHarry:\nYes, you see there was no competition then, if you didn't get this breaker you'd get the next one because\nthere weren't that many guys out. There is definitely still camaraderie. We meet out here at the surfing\nmuseum every Friday and tell big stories and have a lot of laughs.\nWe've had parties and reunions, we're still good friends. We had\nfriends from Burlingame and San Jose ... from all over. It didn't\ncause a problem because it wasn't that crowded out there.\n\nSurfing at Indicators: Jack Moore, Sam Maugeri, Bill\nGrace\n\nIn our day, we surfed Cowells, the Rivermouth, and Pleasure Point.\nWe didn't surf too much at Steamer Lane because if you lost your\nboard it would go into the rocks. There were some guys surfing out\nthere but it wasn't like it is now. There were no leashes; the size and\nweight of the boards we used would have torn your leg off.\n\nOLM:\nWhen would you say surfing really began to take off as a popular sport and feelings of localism became\nprominent?\nHarry:\nIt was after the war, when wetsuits came out and the boards changed so that almost anybody could carry one.\nIt was also that it became the fad in the movies and really started picking up. We never dreamt that it would\nbecome as big, powerful, and as money oriented as it has. In fact there was some good surf here a month ago\nand they said there were about 250 to 300 surfers between Steamers and Cowell Beach. Everybody said if it\nwasn't for the wetsuits they would not be out there.\nOLM:\nDo you know how Steamer Lane got its name?\nHarry:\nClaude \"Duke\" Horan. He's the guy that named Steamer Lane. We were on the beach one day with a big\nwinter storm and had a fire going up against the cliff to try and keep warm. The waves were really big and he\n\n4\n\nlooked outside and said, \"My God, look outside, they're\nbreaking clean out in the steamer lanes.\" He's referring to the\nshipping lanes outside. You'll hear other stories, but I'm sorry,\nthat's how it happened.\n\nSteamer Lane in the early 1940's\n\nOLM:\nWhen did you stop surfing and why?\nHarry:\nWell, I got married in 1948; so shortly after that, I was working two or three jobs trying to make ends meet\nand pay rent. I was just too busy.\nOLM:\nCan you recall one of the biggest or best days you've ever surfed?\nHarry:\nI would say one August day there was a tropical storm down in the Pacific and we had big surf and hot\nweather. We'd actually dunk ourselves in the water to cool off. We could pick (the waves) up at Indicators or\noutside of Indicators (which we used to call Cypress Point because of the Cypress trees out there). We'd ride\nthem all the way to the beach one right after the other, just fantastic surf. It was at least head high which is\ngood for Cowells. It was pretty big for us with our paddleboards.\n\nAlthough Harry is no longer surfing he remains an important part of the surfing society. On Fridays he and his\nfriends volunteer at the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum in the lighthouse at Steamer Lane. We are thankful for the\ntime Harry spent with us and for the memories that he generously shared.\n\nSource\nText copyright 1996 Ocean Life Magazine. It took until the late 1800's and early\n1900's before it was introduced to the U.S. Mainland, mostly along\nthe southern coast of California. Surfing became known in the Santa\nCruz area when a few young men from the beaches of southern\nCalifornia migrated to the San Francisco Bay Area to seek jobs or to\nattend college. They already knew how to surf and brought their\nboards with them. Soon they discovered the beaches of Monterey\nBay and the outstanding surf breaking across the outer reefs and\nsandbars at Cowell's Beach. They also discovered the good surf at\nthe mouth of the San Lorenzo River and at Pleasure Point.\nLocal teenagers on the beach kept close tabs on how these visitors\nCypress Point in the late '30s or early '40s\nwere able to catch and ride waves with their surfboards. This caused\nmuch excitement with the teenagers. By borrowing the visitors' boards and getting some instruction from them, they\nsoon were hooked on the sport and started building their own boards in school wood shops. These early boards were\nhollow and weighed 60 to 90 pounds.\nAt this time in history, there were no surf shops, wet suits, leashes, balsa or foam\nboards, \"Giget\", surf music, etc. It would be 30 years before the epic surfing movie,\n\"The Endless Summer\", was shown.\nAbout 1936, a high degree of camaraderie developed between the visitors and the\nlocal teens. This prompted David Steward to invite them to store their surfboards in\nthe basement of his parents' house at Gharkey Street and Lighthouse Avenue. It\nwas here that the idea of forming the Santa Cruz Surfing Club came about. When\nthe Stewards moved to a house on Bay Street with a barn behind it, the visitors\nwere invited to use the loft of the barn not just for storing their boards, but for\nsleeping as well. Since the barn was only three blocks from Cowell's Beach, it\nThe Steward's barn\nbecame a regular meeting place for all surfers\nIn 1938, the Santa Cruz jaycees built a board storage house on Cowell's Beach\nbetween the Santa Cruz Horseshoe Club and the pier bath house. Space not used\nby the club members was rented out to non-members. Around the same time, the\nclub rented a former hamburger stand, only 30 feet from the board house, as their\nclubhouse.\n1\n\nAs the club grew and became more serious, they elected officers and had T-shirts\nand sweat shirts made with the club's logo. Members and their friends spent\nmany happy years growing up on the sands in front of their clubhouse. Beach\nvolleyball and the rigors of surfing resulted in strong and healthy bodies.\nMost members served in the armed forces in World War II. Fortunately, they all\nreturned home safely, but things were never the same on the beach again. Many\nof the members drifted away from the old ways and got on with their lives—\ncollege, marriage, families, jobs and responsibilities.\nIn 1952, the board house was taken down and the club disbanded.[1] The\nclubhouse itself is now part of a private home on Frederick Street. The club\nmembers and their friends have had three reunions since then. The 50th reunion,\n1986, was held at the Coconut Grove just a few months after opening the Mark\nAbbott Memorial Lighthouse Surfing Museum.\nIn 1992, based on an inspiration of some of the original club members, a surfing\nsculpture monument was erected on West Cliff Drive at Pelton Avenue. It is\ndedicated to all surfers, past, present, and future.\n\n2\n\nBoard space in this “board house” was\nrented for $1.00 per month.\n\nListed below are the names of the original Santa Cruz Surfing Club members:\n\n\nJames S.
