In all there were six\nschool districts on the mountain. The first district was Summit School, originally housed in a\nprivate residence near the cross-roads of Summit Road and the Santa Cruz Highway in the\n1870's. The school was near Schultheis Lagoon which \"was a favorite spot in which to pass our\nnoon hour paddling around on half-submerged logs,\" recalled Mrs. E. H. (Loomis) Chase. The\nschool was finally located at a permanent location one-half mile down the Santa Cruz Highway\ntoward Patchen. This school house, built by Edward Martin, is now a private residence.\n(40:1/2/1962; 38:/6/10/1935; 34:12/1927)\nThe second school on the mountain was also built in the 1870's. Lyman Burrell donated land\nright on the boundaries of Santa Clara County and Santa Cruz County, for the school which\nbears his name, Burrell School. In 1889 the Burrell School burned during a brush fire that\ncovered a large area of the mountains before finally being extinguished near the Highland\nSchool. The Burrell School was rebuilt by local residents in 1890, and on July 4th of that year it\nwas given the first flag pole of any mountain school. The new school was also the first in the\nmountains to have a school bell. The school is now a private residence, with the new owners\nremodeling the building. (40:12 / 4 / 1961; 34:5 / 1910)\nLittle is known about the Wright's School, located at Wright's Station. The school served the\ncommunity of Wright's from the 1880's until 1929. The school was finally suspended\npermanently in 1932 because of a general decline in the population of the Wright's area. (8)\nIn 1882, Miss Rose Merrill held classes in a little cottage in back of the depot building at Laurel.\nThe children were not subjected to tests or grades. What books that could be found were\nsupplied by the children. The average daily attendance was between six and fifteen students.\nThe teachers were paid between $55 in 1884 and $65 in 1906, but their living expenditures\n\nwere minimal. The rent for the teacher's cottage was only $2.50 per month. The school was the\nfirst teaching experience for many of the early teachers who were fresh out of San Jose Normal\nSchool. In 1947 the school closed and the children were bused to Scotts Valley Union School.\n(2:22-27, 33)\nThe first classes held at Highland School, 1881-1882 session, were held in an old Chinese ranchhand cabin. The next year Judge George Miller donated one-third acre for a new school\nbuilding. Local residents built the building and William Sears was the first teacher. In 1892 the\nschool census report shows twenty-two pupils in the Highland School. Of these, seven were\nunder five years of age, which leads one to believe that the school might have been used as a\nbaby-sitting service as well as an educational institution. In the 1890's faculty members from\nStanford University held summer seminars at Highland School in such subjects as economics,\nhistory, and political science.\nThe April 18, 1906 earthquake damaged the school and The Realty chided the trustees for being\nso slow in repairing the school. In 1914 a new school was built next to the original one. The old\nschool building was sold to the Farm Bureau and renamed Highland Hall. In 1971 the newer of\nthe two schools burned down. Presently the old school is being used as a residence.\n(40:8/13/1959, 12/7/1961, 8/20/1959; 10; 34:6/1906; 44:125)\nOn December 1, 1906, a group of residents living in the lower section of the Highland School\nDistrict met in the home of R. S. Griffith, and Redwood Lodge Road. These neighbors were\nconcerned that their children had to walk a mile and a half in the rain up the hill to the Highland\nSchool. Voting to form a new school district the parents sought the approval of the\nSuperintendent of Santa Cruz County Schools, C. S. Price. With Price's approval the parents built\na twenty-six by thirty-foot, one-room school costing $200. Miss C. Tempelten opened the new\nHester Creek School on September 1, 1906. (34:12/1906; 40:7/21/1959) In 1949, the Summit,\nBurrell, Highland, and Hester Creek schools merged and formed a new school district, Loma\nPrieta School District. Hester Creek School became the Hester Creek Community Church\n(American Sunday School Union).\nThe constant problem facing the elected trustees of the various mountain school districts was\nthat the teachers did not stay long. Most of the teachers were women and for many of them\nthe mountain school was their first assignment. After teaching for a year or two, most went on\nto other districts. In 1879, the average spent on education by each district was under $450 a\nyear. Figures from 1881 to 1882 reveal that the State of California's share in educating the\nchildren of the Santa Cruz Mountains ranged between $33 and $100 annually per child, while\nthe County of Santa Clara apportioned $63.33 to $190 per school district. The pay for teachers\nin 1892 was an average of $57.93 per month for female teachers while their male counterparts\nreceived $96.36. Although the teacher turnover was quite high and the total spent on local\neducation quite low, the children were educated. Some of the former pupils continued their\neducation and returned to teach in the schools where they had once been students.\n(34:9/1906; 46:205-206; 42;64; 33:9/3/1881)\n\nSource\nExcerpted from Payne, Stephen Michael. It is titled\n\"Circular of Information,\" and is much like today's college catalog. It gives the objectives of the\nschool, faculty, calendar, admission and grading information, student activities, and a\ndescription of the academic departments and courses. Below are excerpts from the circular; we\nhave not included the department and course descriptions, but have included most of the text\ncovering student life and administration. – Editor\nTo Parents\nThe school seeks most earnestly the constant co-operation of the parents in all of its efforts\ntoward the uplift and education of the young people in its charge. Without it, we realize that\nresults will be meager, no matter how fine our equipment or how efficient our teaching force.\nWe want you to be acquainted with us, and intimately familiar with the administration of the\nschool. To this end a cordial invitation is extended to all parents to visit the school frequently,\nto ask questions, to bring us your complaints, to consult freely with the principal and teachers\nabout your children and their progress.\nThere are some things which work for good in the school that only parents can attend to. They\nshould see that the attendance is good, that tardiness should be a rarity, that social functions\nshould never interfere with school work, that high ideals of scholarship and character should be\ncontinually held before the children and words of encouragement and appreciation be never\nwanting. A good, comfortable place for home study is the right of every child, and home study\nshould be insisted upon. Two hours each day is a necessity for almost every student. If the pupil\nmakes the claim to his parent that he does not need that much, the matter should be looked\ninto. The teachers would heartily welcome the formation of a Parent Teachers' Association of\nsome kind, so that organized co-operation may be established between the home and the\nschool these great factors in the training of the young.\nEntrance into High School marks a critical epoch in the life of the young student. New subjects,\nnew associations, new and strange methods of administration, new demands upon his selfreliance, initiative, resourcefulness, a new passion of loyalty to an institution of some size and\nattainments, a new physical development which induces mental disturbances and often\ndiscouragement if there are maladjustments of any kind; all these call for the most careful\ntreatment on the part of parent as well as teacher. To the youth, High School life is everything.\nIt \"fills the whole sky.\" School work, its related activities, its friendships and society, its games,\nmake up most that is interesting to the young at this time. So there must be just as careful\nguidance given in these matters as parents and teachers working together can possibly effect.\nThe school exercises a certain amount of supervision over the athletic and other activities of\nthe students, and most gratifying results are apparent on all sides from the guidance which is\nalways given in a friendly spirit and received with a friendly spirit by the pupils. In fact it may be\nsaid that the ideal which pervades all of the relationships between teachers and students in this\nschool, is to guide and befriend, and to compel as little as possible, to the end that that true\n2\n\nself-discipline may be established in the young, which shall be the expression, both now and\nthrough life, not of compulsion from without but of impulses from within. The school affairs of\nthe students are always attended by the teachers and the best of feelings are apparent. The\nonly lack is a more extensive habit on the part of parents of attending these social affairs.\nThe parents are urged to give especial attention to the Report Cards, both kinds, signing and\nreturning the six weekly cards. If poor work is manifested by the report, the school should\npromptly receive a visit. Sometimes a few words from a parent, who knows his child far better\nthan the teachers can ever hope to, will give the problem of that child's education an entirely\nnew aspect.\nFinally, the High School is a place of business and a place for business. While there is every\nsympathy with the exuberant spirits of young life and no tyranny is practised, yet it is believed\nthat the students are old enough to realize that they are engaged in a serious undertaking and\nare pursuing it at the expense of the hard-earned wages of the tax-payers. Successful progress\nis within the reach of every one who will do each day's task. Those who will not work are predoomed to failure and must either learn the lesson of concentrated effort or else drop out of\nthe ranks.\n\nGeneral Information\n\nThis Circular is published primarily for the use of the students of the High School, their parents\nand the citizens of Santa Cruz, who are interested in the work of the institution. It is hoped that\nit will be carefully perused and kept for ready reference at all times, as the attempt has been\nmade to include in it all necessary information recording the school and its work.\nAdmission\nStudents who are graduates of schools of grammar grade are admitted to the Freshman\nclass. Proof of such graduation may be demanded at any time. Other students are\nadmitted to appropriate classes upon consultation with the Principal.\nPromotion\nPromotion depends upon a grade known as 3- in the daily work, supplemented in some\ncases by Final Examinations. Promotion in each subject is absolutely independent of\nevery other.\nCredits\nA credit is given for one year's work in any subject which results in promotion.\nUniversity matriculation credits are on a different basis. See below.\n3\n\nStatus\nThe status or class of a student is determined by the number of credits which he has.\nThree credits give Sophomore status, seven give Junior and eleven give Senior. When a\nstudent has a number of credits between those mentioned, he belongs to the class\nindicated by the lower number of credits.\nNo less than four studies are to be taken each term, nor more than four unless\nsuccessful records have been made in the past.\nGraduation\nFifteen credits are required for graduation.\nSpring Entering Classes\nAlthough but one class graduates yearly, i.e. in June, yet classes are received into the school\nevery half-year. The following explanation will elucidate the plan. To classes entering in the Fall\nor first term, will be offered all the subjects in the curriculum. But only a limited number of\nthem will be given to those who enter in the Spring or second term. All of the latter class of\nstudents are required to take two periods per day of English, thus completing the Freshman\nyear of English in one term. Latin is also given under exactly the same plan but is elective. Thus\nall Spring-entering Freshmen will be ready for Sophomore English in the Fall and those who\nelect Latin will likewise be ready for Sophomore Latin.\nEnglish and Latin would make four periods per day, the usual number for regular students.\nOther electives given in the Spring are Drawing, Manual Training and Domestic Science. A\ncourse in Arithmetic, introductory in character to High School mathematics, is compulsory for\nall students who were not honorary in Arithmetic upon graduation from the Eighth grade. All\nother Freshman subjects are begun only in the Fall term, and for these, the Spring-entering\nFreshmen must wait.\nTable of courses for Spring-entering Freshmen. Spring term:\nSubject\nMatr. Ordinary students will\ntake four and one-half years. Those who desire for some special reason to graduate in three\nand a half years should at once consult the Principal and formulate a course of study.\nCourses of Study\nThere are in the Santa Cruz High School no courses of study as they are generally termed.\nCertain subjects are required of all students. All others are elective. It is presumed that a High\nSchool pupil with the guidance of his teachers, is capable of systematizing his own subjects\naccording to a definite purpose wich he has in view, and it is desired to give as free choice of\nsubjects according to individual tastes as is consistent with a well-rounded education.\nAt the beginning of the descriptive matter on each Department in this book, a paragraph of\ngeneral remarks is placed, intended to help the student and parent to a conception of the\nnature of each subject so that an intelligent choice may be made. Pupils are not to choose\nsubjects ahead of their own status without special permission. Nor may a subject once chosen\nbe dropped without a request to the Principal, accompanied by a note from the parent.\n[The next section of the circular describes each department and its courses: English,\nMathematics, Science, Latin, German, Spanish, Drawing, Commercial (Typewriting,\nStenography, Bookkeeping, Commercial Law), Manual Training (Metal and Woodworking),\nDomestic Science (Cooking, Nutrition), and Music. This section has been omitted here.]\n\nStudent Activities\nStudent Body\nAll the students of the school are organized into an Association called the Student Body which\nmeets every month in the Assembly Hall, and transacts business pertaining to the students'\naffairs. Elections for officers in this association are held each term and are by the Australian\nBallot System and Direct Primaries.\nThe High School paper, the Trident, is controlled by this organization, the editing and managing\nstaff being elected at the same time and in the same way as the other officers.\nOne of the most important activities in the High School is carried on through the Improvement\nCommittee of the Student Body. This is a survival of a former independent organization called\nthe Improvement Society. It has been and still is one of the most energetic and efficient factors\nin the school. It has for its chief aim the beautification of the building and grounds, although\nmany other matters of more general import have passed through their hands. Many pictures\nhave been bought, vines planted, plants secured for the halls, a rest-room for the girls\nfurnished, and just now the front entrance hall is being furnished with rugs, settles, etc.\nDonations for these worthy objects are occasionally received from friends of the schools but\n5\n\nthe committee raises its funds principally by conducting a second-hand book exchange and by\nholding sales, entertainments, etc.\nAthletics\nThe athletic interests of the students are taken care of by two associations, the Boys' Athletic\nAssociation and the Girls' Athletic Association. These are independent of the Student Body,\nbeing supported by dues of the members and by the proceeds of games, meets, etc., but act in\nco-operation with it whenever necessary. The school is a member of the Coast Counties Athletic\nLeague, in which it has achieved a most enviable record. All of the current trophies given by the\nLeague are in the possession of the school. Two have been won permanently and two others, if\nwon this year, will pass into the permanent possession of the school also. While the school's\nnotable athletic success is due in some measure to the fact that it is the largest in the League, it\nis undoubted due much more for the fine spirit of loyalty which pervades the institution and\nthe large measure of paternal guidance and friendliness toward student activities on the part of\nthe Faculty without which many schools have to struggle along as best they can.\nOne of the teachers is also the Director of Student Finances, having the ultimate handling of all\nfunds except those of the class organizations, and the auditing of their books. Each organization\nelects its own Treasurer, who is responsible to the Director, and must keep his accounts in\naccordance with a system devised by him. This plan insures not only a business-like expenditure\nof money, but trains the pupils in right business methods and ideals.\nBetter than any extraordinary prowess in athletic lines, is the reputation which the school\nenjoys for fair play, sportsman-like conduct, and generous courtesy to visiting teams. Ideals of\nthis kind are more important than any trophies that may fall to our lot, and it is to be hoped\nthat the high reputation that the school now enjoys among the schools of the League may\nnever be lost. There is a certain criticism commonly made of school athletics that it has been\nthe steady policy of Santa Cruz High to avoid. The charge is made that owing to the nature of\ninterscholastic contests, too few are engaged in athletics, and the benefits derived are limited\nto a small number of students. To avoid this just criticism and to provide training where it is\nneeded and to the largest number, interclass contests of all kinds are fostered and games\nwithin the school itself. A handball court, tennis court, and basketball court are equipped for\nthe use of all the students and are exceedingly popular with a large percentage of girls and\nboys. Still more, however, needs to be done among the girls to provide them with the proper\nphysical training, and arrangements should be made for securing a much more extensive\nplayground. No modern High School is properly equipped without a minimum of five acres of\ngrounds, a large part of which should be set apart for playgrounds.\nDebating\nIn debating the school is represented by two societies, the Forum and the Delphia, both\nexceedingly active and producing the best of results. Such a keen interest has of late been\naroused that an instructor in Oral Expression is going to be a strong demand in the near future.\nA series of class debates, followed by interclass, is held each year, the competition for places on\n6\n\nthe teams being very warm. These debates are all public and the patrons of the school are\ninvited to be present.\nStatistics\n\nYear\n\nEnrollment\nfirst month\n\nEnrollment\nper Year\n\nAverage Daily\n% of\nAttendance Attendance\n\nBoys Girls Total Boys Girls Total\n1906-07 79\n\n130 209\n\n102 148 250\n\n194\n\n96.0\n\n1907-08 74\n\n132 206\n\n96\n\n152 248\n\n195\n\n98.7\n\n1908-09 90\n\n135 225\n\n101 160 261\n\n219\n\n99.1\n\n1909-10 93\n\n145 238\n\n116 186 302\n\n233\n\n99.1\n\n1910-11 107 174 28I\n\n129 200 329\n\n278\n\n99.2\n\n1911-12 119 190 309\n\nYear\n\nValuation\nTax Levy\nof Lots, Buildings Assessed Valuation\nVols. in Library\non $100\nand Equipment\n\n1906-07 $60,000\n\n$5,200,000\n\n25¢\n\n500\n\n1907-08 60,000\n\n5,500,000\n\n32¢\n\n550\n\n1908-09 70,000\n\n6,500,000\n\n32¢\n\n630\n\n1909-10 80,000\n\n8,100,000\n\n27 1/2¢\n\n760\n\n1910-11 85,000\n\n7,395,000\n\n37 1/2¢\n\n960\n\n1911-12 90,000\n\n7,500,000\n\n30¢\n\n1010\n\n7\n\nSchool News: An excerpt from the September, 1912 issue of the Trident\nIn the Library's collection are issues of the High School's monthly newspaper, the “Trident” from\n1908 to 1913. Below is the School News section from the first issue of the Fall term, September\n1912. It gives us a sense of school life at that time. - Editor\nAfter three months of delightful vacation, we are all glad to be back once more in dear old\nSanta Cruz Hi. We find in the upper classes several new students, and as usual many Freshmen.\nWe sincerely hope that these young folk will become important factors in the life of the school.\nWe welcome two new teachers into our faculty Miss G.D. Temple, formerly of Clovis High School,\nCalifornia, as teacher of the modern languages;\nand Miss Lyles, recently graduated from the Santa\nBarbara School of Domestic Arts, as teacher of\nsewing. The course in sewing is proving very\ninteresting to those taking it. The girls expect to\nmake during the year a complete wardrobe,\nincluding the trimming of their winter hats. A\nroom has been well equipped for this work.\n\nSanta Cruz High School, built in 1895, stood at Walnut\nAvenue and California Street. It burned down in 1913.\n\nAt last our dream of a stage has been realized. Although we had hoped for a bigger auditorium,\nwe are grateful to the Board of Education for what they have done. The Glee Clubs expect to\nchristen the new stage by presenting the latter part of the month a cantata of flowers, for the\nbenefit of the football fund. The boys of the team have charge of the affair, and judging from\nthe enthusiasm on the part of the boys, it will be both a financial and a social success. Special\nscenery is being painted for the occasion.\nA few days after the opening of school the Senior Class held a lively meeting, at which time the\nfollowing officers were chosen for this term: President, Alta Kratzenstein; Vice President,\nFrances McMurray; Secretary-Treasurer, Fern Wilkins, and S.B. Rep., Perle Asmussen. With such\nofficers as these, the class should be as progressive as that of last year.\nThe class of '12 have filled a long felt want by providing a beautiful Boston fern and brass\njardiniere for the small hall in front of the drawing room. The Improvement Committee expect\nto purchase a similar one for the front hall.\nHip-hip, hooray! No more exams or test days; in fact, it is a case of \"Nothing to do 'til\ntomorrow.\" The notice Mr. Bond sent around to that effect was greeted by approval on one\n8\n\nside and dissatisfaction on the other. It was the good student who was dissatisfied, because he\nwould lose several days’ vacation now and again; and the poor student was the happy one.\nQueer, isn't it?\nThe Delphia Literary Society is planning a fine program to be given before the Student Body in a\nshort time. Whenever this society appears before us it gives an interesting and profitable\nentertainment, and its work is aIways enjoyed and appreciated.\nArrangements have been made for a special course to be given in domestic science for the\nboys. We understand that principally plain and camp cooking will be taught. Now, boys, do the\nright thing and give us girls an occasional \"hand out.\"\nThe Board of Education has procured a vacant lot near school for the use of the agricultural\nclass, taught by Mr. Handshy.\nAnother interesting course added to the curriculum this year is industrial science. Only eight are\ntaking up this interesting and valuable work; but it is hoped that more will take advantage of\nthis opportunity when it is again afforded.\nOwing to the resignation of the secretary and treasurer of the G. A. A., Gladys Daubenbiss has\nbeen elected secretary, and Genevieve Grant, treasurer, and also coach.\nThis year's Junior Class officers are: President, Austin Mosher; Vice President, Lois Nelson;\nSecretary-Treasurer, Dorothy Fargo, and S.B. Rep., Ralph Greer.\nSophomores: President, Jay Gates: Vice President, Gertrude Rae; Secretary-Treasurer, Ezma\nLynch, and S. B. Rep., Aubrey Howland.\nFreshmen: President, John O'Keefe; Vice President, Ned Atkinson; Secretary-Treasurer, Joe\nWheeler; and S. B. Rep., Georgia Brown.\nWe can justly be proud of this year's orchestra, composed of some eighteen members. Its\nuntiring leader, Mrs. Watson, predicts great things for this term.\nThe boys' literary society, The Forum, should progress under the following officers: President,\nHaswell Leask, Vice President, Earl Smith; Secretary-Treasurer, Harold Lynam; Reporter, Philip\nCooley, Sergeant at Arms, Austin Mosher.\nThe Honor Society expects to continue its meetings at the homes of the men teachers. We\nshould realize the importance of this society, whose highest aim is to promote the best\ninterests of the school in as many ways as possible.\nMr. Bond's office presents a fine appearance in its new furnishings. We appreciate the new\nlibrary system.\n9\n\nThe front seats in both study halls, which have been vacant for almost two weeks, are slowly\ngaining popularity.\nThe large number of boys enrolled in the sight singing class proves, when they give up three\nmornings a week from eight thirty to nine o'clock, that this course is popular.\nThe girls' basement has been renovated. The walls have been boarded up, hung with pictures,\nand comfortable seats have been arranged around them. All that it lacks now is a mirror. The\ngirls find it a difficult problem to arrange their coiffure and adjust their hats by the present one.\nWe should, during the present football season, make it our business to see that the games be\nsupported, especially those with outside teams, and in a manner befitting our school. This is\none of the best ways in which we can show that we are loyal members of our high school.\n\nSource\nThe September 1912 Trident and the photograph are part of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries'\ncollection.\n\n10\n\nSchool Honors for Girls\nIn the library's collection are issues from 1908 to 1913 of Santa Cruz High School's monthly\nnewspaper, the “Trident”. The following editorial gives us some sense of the young women's\nactivities and status at the High School. Note: In school publications of the time, the Delphia and\nthe Forum are called either debating or literary societies. The Delphia appears to have been for\nwomen; the Forum was for men. – Editor\nThe subject of granting the girls of Santa Cruz High School some of our important offices is a\nnew one. But it is one that deserves consideration. The girls in this school have never held what\nwe called our most important and honorary offices, such as editor of the \"Trident\" or president\nof the Student Body. Instead, they have been given such offices as art editor or literary editor,\nbut these positions are not the best we have to offer.\nThere is no reason why they boys should always be the leaders at school. In our state do not\nthe women have the same right as the men to vote? And would it not be an excellent plan to\ngive the girls a chance to make use of their capabilities as leaders? We do at school what we\nhope to do on a larger scale in life. Among these efforts is the one to make ourselves good\ncitizens. In trying to do this, we have organized under a constitution, elected officers,\nestablished a method of election, and, in short, done much to make school life preparatory for\ncommunity life.\nNow that the citizens of our state have progressed far enough in giving the women suffrage,\nwe, the citizens of Santa Cruz High School, ought to follow their good example and give the girls\nthe right to hold public offices.\nWe can all see that the girls would be just as capable as the boys in holding these positions. Let\nus draw conclusions from our own school life. Our societies that best show the members'\npowers as leaders are the Forum and the Delphia. I am sure that we all agree that the Delphia\nhas entertained the Student Body as well as the Forum has. In fact, the Delphia has rendered\nseveral interesting programs since the Forum was last heard from. They, that is, the members\nof the Delphia, have all worked hard to gain new members, they have taken up many new\nsubjects, but best of all, they have frequently informed the Student Body of their progress, and\nurged greater interest in their society. Perhaps the boys have worked just as hard, but they\nhave not shown themselves as full of \"push and go\" as the Delphia has.\nThe society that best shows the capability of the girls in business matters is the Girls' Athletic\nAssociation. The basketball team has gone to neighboring towns to play, and has brought other\nteams here, and they have managed their affairs very nicely, and have shown themselves just\nas competent as the boys in these matters.\nDo not these business-like achievements prove that the girls are capable of being our leaders?\nIf the girls knew that a great deal of responsibility lay with them, their interest in school affairs\n11\n\nwould increase. There would be a keener spirit of rivalry between them and the boys, and this\nwould lead to a greater interest for both, to better mutual support and more unified and\nstronger school spirit. As a result our school would be benefited, and our standard of fairness\nand equality raised.\nLast, but not least, is the benefit that the girls themselves would receive. By taking a greater\npart in school affairs the girls would be capable to take an important part in the community in\nlater life, and in every way we should be better fitted as citizens of Santa Cruz and of the United\nStates.\nThis chance would require no sacrifice from the boys. To the contrary, it would be to their\nbenefit, for the girls have new ideas and plans that can be worked out a great deal easier if the\nefforts of both the girls and the boys were combined.\n\nIt is the library’s intent to provide accurate information, however, it is not possible for the library\nto completely verify the accuracy of all information.
