From the Pleasure Pier, looking towards the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. To the far right is the roller-coaster called the Santa Cruz Scenic Railway. There have been three roller-coasters on the beach. The first one was constructed in 1884, with a high point of 24 feet. In June 1908, L.A. Thompson's Scenic Railway opened. With a length of 1,050 feet, it was the longest in the United States. The Giant Dipper, constructed by Arthur Looff, replaced it in 1924. The Giant Dipper has a height of 70 feet.
