Scudding leather
Description
An account of the resource
This photograph was taken in 1954 when hides were still hand-scudded. After hair and flesh were removed chemically and mechanically, scudding removed fine hair roots to produce leather of even grain and depth. [Artistically, it is interesting to compare this image to the same subject in aa-008--both by Ansel Adams.]

Salz employee illustrates the scudding process
Description
An account of the resource
A Salz employee illustrates the scudding process that removed fine hair roots from the hides. It was a very exacting and challenging task. The implement used was a large, dull blade. The hide was stretched over a wooden, sloped structure designed specifically for this work called a "horse". Compare this to aa-019 which shows Ansel Adams handling the same subject in another way.

Spray machines at Salz Tannery
Description
An account of the resource
The spray machines at Salz Tannery needed to be constantly adjusted. Depending on the finish required, the spray booths deposited waxes, lacquers, oils, dyes, pigments and protein solutions on the leather. Before this, the leather was dried. After this process the leather was plated and possibly embossed with novel patterns. In the case of California Saddle Leather TM, it was glazed on the glazing jack, which imparted a brilliant, smooth shine.

Glazing Salz's California Saddle Leather
Description
An account of the resource
Glazing Salz's California Saddle Leather TM involved using a glazing jack. Each side of the hide was glazed twice to create a mirror-like surface. The protein (albumin) used in the glazing process was derived from egg whites. After drying on the surface of the leather, the glazing jack used a large chunk of glass to burnish the surface of the leather with heat and pressure. This smoothed the grain or surface and brought up a rich luster. On some leathers this was the final process. On others like the California Latigo TM, it took place in the middle of the finishing process. Dyes were then added to enhance the color.
