Description
An account of the resource
An index to newspaper and periodical articles from a variety of Santa Cruz publications.
It is a collection of over 87,000 articles, primarily from the <em>Santa Cruz Sentinel</em>, that have been clipped and filed in subject folders. While these articles of local interest range in date from the early 1900's to the present, most of the collection and clipped articles are after roughly 1960. There is an ongoing project to scan the complete articles and include them in this collection.<br /><br />Also included are more than 350 full-text local newspaper articles on films and movie-making and on the Japanese-American internment.<br /><br /> In addition, this is an online index for births, deaths, and personal names from <em>The Mountain Echo.</em> The complete print index is available at the library. For more information see <a href="https://history.santacruzpl.org/omeka/items/show/134957#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0">The Mountain Echo</a>.
Most of the indexed articles are available on microfilm in the Californiana Room or in the clipping files in the Local History Room at the Downtown branch. Copies of individual articles may be available by contacting the Reference Department - <a href="https://www.santacruzpl.org/contact/">Ask Us.<br /><br /></a>
<p></p>
While there is some overlap between this index and <a href="https://www.santacruzpl.org/historic_newspaper_index/">the Historic Newspaper Index</a><a> (approximately 1856-1960), they are different databases and are searched separately.</a>

Voters’ Poll List of 1850
Santa Cruz County, California
Transcribed & Edited by
Stanley D. Stevens
“Following is the poll ... of the first election held in Santa Cruz County, on the first
Monday in April, 1850:—”
The source of the 1850 Poll List data is Edward Sanford Harrison’s The History of Santa
Cruz County. San Francisco, Pacific Press Publishing Company, 1892, p. 80ff.
[Compiler's Note (May 5, 2001): A list of "Old Residents of Santa Cruz" appears in the
Santa Cruz Sentinel July 22, 1871 (p. 2, col. 4). It may be the source that Harrison used
for his book. Its subtitle is: "Poll of the election held at Santa Cruz, County of
Branciforte, on the first Monday of April, 1850, for the election of county officers, and
one Clerk of the Supreme Court, one District Attorney for the Second Judicial District,
and one Town Councilman."
Note: While Harrison does not provide the results of the election, the Sentinel article
does. It follows at the end of this compilation.]
Readers also may wish to use other Poll Lists, see Stevens (cited below) for “Santa Cruz
County Poll List of 1854,” and Rowland (cited below) for Soquel “Voters of 1868.”
Resident alien males (foreign born, non-U.S. citizens) who had arrived in California (or
Santa Cruz County) and had declared their intent to become U. S. citizens, would not
yet be eligible to vote in the 1850 election; e.g., Frederick Augustus Hihn, a German
immigrant who arrived in San Francisco on October 12, 1849, declared his intent to
become a citizen at Sacramento, June 6, 1850, and was naturalized in Santa Cruz, July 2,
1855. Therefore, his name does not appear in either the 1850 nor the 1854 Poll List.
Readers are advised that Harrison’s list contains some names of men who were
residents of the Año Nuevo-Pescadero area (in today’s San Mateo County). The
boundary between the two counties was revised in 1868 to annex to San Mateo County
the area north from the Waddell Bluffs. For a better description see Santa Cruz County
in Donald Thomas Clark’s Santa Cruz County Place Names, Santa Cruz: Santa Cruz
Historical Society, 1986.
The 213 names as published by Harrison are presented in two sequences: (1) the list in
numerical order, and (2) a new list rearranged in alphabetical order, last name first,
with the number (indicating position in Harrison’s published list).
The names presented in the Alphabetical Sequence include the most accurate and
complete version found (using the sources cited), and the (alternate name) as shown by
Harrison, shown in parentheses (....). Names shown in square brackets [....] are
suggested by the Editor as alternates that might warrant additional research. Cross
references to alternate names are provided as appropriate. The number after the name
refers to the sequence as it appears in Harrison’s list.

Local News Index

Local News Index
