Closing three days of intensive and fruitful effort the \"Noah's Ark\" company returned Wednesday evening to the Warner Bros. studio in Hollywood.
Director Michael Curtiz, known as one of the greatest of European directors, in conversation with a Sentinel scribe, summed up his opinion of local settings in one word: \"Marvelous!\" Curtiz, a master of the art of accomplishing big things in movie production, was imported from Hungary by the Warners, especially for this super play. In \"Moon of Israel,\" his greatest European masterpiece, recently shown in this country, Curtiz handled mobs of thousands of people in many of the scenes, making of it a stupendous and impressive spectacle.
\"Noah's Ark\" is expected to rise to great heights as a film sensation. Already from 500 to 5000 people per day have been engaged in certain portions of the story which takes in both ancient and modern times. Scenes will be included using sets and crowds of greater extent than ever heretofore engaged in the filming of a motion picture. In addition, it is admitted that the new sensation, the vitaphone will be employed in many important sequences of the wonder play which has been two months in production and is now only about half completed. \"Noah's Ark\" will be given its world premiere in September.
Secure Beautiful Scenes
Director Curtiz with his staff of able assistants secured many extremely beautiful shots at the Big Basin locations in Governor's Camp. Panchromatic motion picture film is now used extensively and with this, aided by special artificial lighting equipment, some striking results were obtained for the Biblical portions of the play.
George O'Brien, Guinn Williams and Malcolm Waite appear as the three sons of Noah, and with Dolores Costello, were the only members of the cast of characters engaged in the part filmed here.
Barney McGill and Bill Rees handled first and second camera, respectively, Elmer Fryer was in charge of the still photography. Fryer was on location here a few years ago on the Renaud Hoffman company under Henry McCarty, with Thunder, the dog star.
Bill Guthrie served the troupe as business manager.
Fox Troupers Leave
With the completion of their roles certain members of the Fox \"Farmer's Daughter\" company, which has been working here for three weeks, are returning home.
Thursday night Harry Dunkinson, Sam De Grasse, B. Hauser and Johnny Rand returned to Hollywood.
The company has been very active and is hopping from one location to another in rapid succession lately. A few minor retakes and special scenes were made yesterday. It appears that the job will be about done and the company ready to depart tonight or tomorrow.\"

Last evening the entire unit, composed of about 30 people, checked out of the St. George, enroute back to southern California.
Various locations were filmed, principally around the redwoods. The movie makers worked in the Big Basin at Glenwood station and other points, securing extremely beautiful and impressive settings. The directors and landscape men were particularly pleased with the locations and believe that \"The Amazing Vagabond,\" the title of the picture, will be replete with natural scenic exteriors.
Excellent Shooting
Glenwood station and in the Big Basin were devoted to most of the scene shooting. Virgil Miller, chief cameraman, stated that the scenes were the best for the work he has taken this year, far outdoing anything in southern California or Arizona for beauty.
Bob Steele, western star, who portrays the leading role in the film, and Tom Lingham, also a star of the cast, were just as enthused with the settings as Miller. Lingham was here five years ago when Tom Mix was being starred in pictures featured by redwood scenery.
The film aggregation has been in Santa Cruz eight days, during which time they stopped at the Hotel St. George.\"

Buildings surrounding the warden's headquarters will be employed for numerous scenes while the big trees of the basin will serve as the locale of much of the most important action of the story. In the film, Steele is shown as a city youth whose father sends him to the timber country in the hope that virile atmosphere will bring him to a man's estate.
The FBO Company completed \"shooting\" at the Glenwood location yesterday, having been favored with perfect sunshine during the length of the day. An initial attempt to photograph among the redwoods in the Big Basin on Wednesday proved futile on account of continued cloudiness.
Virgil Miller, chief cinematographer of the picture, stated last night that he hoped to bring superlative photography out of the Big Basin today. Many particularly choice angles were spotted by Miller and Director Wallace Fox during the course of the location hunting trip which they made around the Big Basin before the major portion of the FBO unit came to the city.\"

There is an ongoing project to scan the complete articles and include them in this collection.Perry Murdock, who is playing the part of a pal of Bob Steele in the FBO production, \"The Amazing Vagabond,\" whose exterior scenes are being filmed in the vicinity of Santa Cruz, probably would have spent last night locked in a box car on the railway siding near Glenwood, except for the fact that Thelma Daniels, Steele's leading woman, left her make-up case behind her when she and other members of the company returned to the city at the end of yesterday's work.
In preparation for the last scene of the day, Murdock was locked in the box car and was subsequently to be pulled out by other members of the cast. Before the scene could be finished, however, the sun dodged behind the clouds to stay, necessitating a halt of activities at that particular remote spot.
Wallace Fox, the director, and Virgil Miller, the chief cinematographer, and other members of the company moved on to the Glenwood station, intending to come back and complete the scene. After a wait of some time, the sun definitely refused to aid the troupe and the company set out for Santa Cruz, Murdock having been completely forgotten.
Half the distance to Santa Cruz had been covered when Miss Daniels discovered the loss of her make-up kit and Jack Sullivan, assistant director, and O. F. Malloy, property man, returned to the Glenwood location to search for it. Arriving there, they failed to perceive it near the station and were moving to the box car some distance away when cries of \"Somebody let me out,\" greeted their ears.
It was soon found that the yells came from the box car. Opening the heavy door which, for the sake of accuracy in the picture, had been locked from the outside, Sullivan and Malloy made the startling discovery that they had involuntarily incarcerated a member of their cast. It appears that Murdock, in the interval that the company had moved on from the box car, had fallen asleep on the straw which covered the floor of the car while he waited in vain for their return. In leaving, the score or more members of the company, traveling, as they were, in several cars, failed to detect Murdock's absence in the confusion incident to the departure. Fortunately for Murdock, he had awakened only a few minutes before the return of Sullivan and Malloy, and had just begun to be uneasy at the time of their propitious arrival.\"
