The junction of Pacific Avenue (r.) and Front Street (l.). In the center is the Flatiron, built by Hugo Hihn in 1860. The first occupant of the ground floor was I. Blum's general merchandise store and later Tanner's drug store. The upper floor housed the county courthouse from 1860-1864. Down Front Street were brothels, saloons, hotels, and Chinese laundries.

Many of these buildings shown here on Front Street, Cooper Street, and Pacific Avenue were later demolished. Shown here are the Leonard Building, the Cooper House and Gottschalks, which had been Leask's department store for years. All were completely or partially demolished. In the foreground is the Octagon building, still present.
