The Daughters of Charity founded Holy Cross School in 1862 as an orphanage.

Pope John Paul II visited the Monterey Bay area on September 17, 1987. He celebrated mass at Laguna Seca Raceway where 50,000 people had gathered to see him. Also on the itinerary was an appearance at the Carmel Basilica before 3,000 people.
The St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church was dedicated on Sunday, May 16, 1915. L. Moretti modeled the church after one in Switzerland. The cement used in its construction came from the local cement plant.
