Was organized at Benecia Barracks March 4, 1864 and was stationed at that post during the whole of its term of service. The unit was mustered out Oct. 25, 1865.

DIED: COWLES- in Santa Cruz July 13, Frederick H. Cowles, a native of Illinois, aged 63 years.
F.H. Cowles is Dead
Frederick H. Cowles, an old soldier died in this city Friday. Some three weeks ago the deceased came to this city from the Soldiers Home at Santa Monica.
Little or nothing is known about the deceased. He will be buried by the members of the local G.A.R. on Sunday.

All old soldiers and sailors of the Civil War are requested to be at the headquarters of Wallace-Reynolds Post on Sunday July 15th at 9:30 A.M. to attend the funeral of Frederick H. Cowles. By order of the Commander.

The funeral of Frederick H. Cowles, the old soldier, was held yesterday morning from Wessendorf and Staffler's Undertaking parlor's, where the services were conducted by Reverend A.W. Hare of the Congregational Church. At the cemetery they were in charge of his old comrades.\" Judge Craghill a leader in the local GAR provided death certificate details.

Frederick H Cowles applied for a pension on March 2, 1893 in San Diego, California. He had enlisted as a private on March 3, 1861, however his original unit was not identified and was discharged [6th CA Inf] at Ft. Douglas Utah Territory on the 25th of October 1865. At the time of the pension application he was 59 years old 5'6 1/2\" in height and weighed 120 lbs, and was listed as being single. His sister Mrs. Dr. E D French who lived in Encenada, Lower California was listed as his next of kin. Correspondence in the files also indicated that he had been admitted to the veteran's home at Sawtelle on March 9, 1893 with a heart disease.

Frederick Cowles was born in Illinois in 1837. During the Civil War he served in Co. H 6th California Infantry. Following the war he worked as a miner and spent his last 4 weeks on Locust St. in Santa Cruz. He died on July 13, 1906 and his death was attributed to Cardio Arterio Sclerosis. Pension records indicated that he was born about 1835, death certificate 1843. Pension records tend to be more accurate because of the legal financial considerations.
